Okayyy, get ready, I have a photoshoot to gush about 📸📸📸 (grab the Kleenex!!! 🤧🥺🥲) First & foremost, I have a big ol’ warm & loving THANK YOU to 3 beautiful ladies that came together & joined me to bring this all into fruition 🫂🫶🏾✨ @ownerofbk @ericapurnell @cosmic_crab You all are absolutely STUNNING, and I’m beyond lucky to showcase you in a way that I believe mainstream media has consistently failed to do. Representation matters. It sends the message that “Yes, you belong here. This is for you. There is nothing ‘wrong’ with you, and nothing excludes you from having your most fundamental, basic human needs met. This is what it looks like for you.” The world needs to see more Black and Brown women, men & everyone in between, in a state of receiving and restfulness. Many of our ancestors couldn’t even afford to imagine taking a nap, let alone receiving bodywork to regulate their nervous systems. Rest and healing weren’t part of the conversation—it was about working, carrying the load, taking the punishment. Survive to suffer. I haven’t been fully able to express the honor it is to be part of a truth I’ve always known in my heart & vivid imagination, but struggled to find reflected as I grew up. With that, I give a heartfelt, teary-eyed THANK YOU to @amandamustard for trulyyyy listening to understand my story and vision. I’m fascinated with the way you see. These breathtaking visuals feel like moments from a dream. Little Marissa’s dream. From my heart, thank you 🤎📸 This post is dedicated to all the beautiful & soulful women who have trusted me to share this moment with them. As a Black woman bodyworker, it’s been an honor to bring to life the imagery I’ve always envisioned—one that my ancestors, and even my immediate family, have rarely seen represented but so desperately deserved. So, I’ll take it upon myself to continually share and facilitate rest for my community and all who align with my practice. I want you to see yourself through this lens. A new narrative for Black rest, wellness, and self. This time, the lens is tender, healthy, rested, and at ease. 🤎 Bodywork by Marissa #bodyworkbymarissa #rest #honor #bodywork #mobilespa #sarga

✨ COLLECTIVE REST: SOUND + BODY JOURNEY ✨ Lately, the world has been asking a lot of us. Endless movement, constantly pulling at our attention, steady demands. This offering is an invitation to pause. We’ll guide you into one supported, restful shape—allowing the body to settle without the need to perform or keep up. Within that stillness, you’ll receive slow, grounding massage and gentle compressions while live sound from crystal bowls moves through the space. Even when the mind feels busy… the body can learn to soften. Even when life feels heavy… you are allowed to set some of it down. Come as you are. Rest your body. Take time to unsubscribe, not forever but for a moment 🍵 🌙 Tuesday, April 21st | 8:15p-9:30p 📍 Brooklyn Flow Yoga Studio 🤍 Hosted by @bodyworkbymarissa × @peaceof_art Limited space. Tickets in bio 🎟️

a few weeks ago, my moms & i planned a surprise birthday visit for my grandma’s birthday 🥹 it was so so heartfelt & wholesome. 4 generations of women through this bloodline- gathering to laugh, eat, cry, honor, uplift & celebrate the woman that has held the fort down for yearsss. she lives back home in our hometown but i know without a doubt she is constantly praying over us & continues to shine her wisdom to guide us as if we were still home. this is my favorite post but slide four with my grandma’s hands… 🥺 man i love that lady i’ve been over the moon & feeling so joyous since returning (peep my cheesing ass smile in the slide 😁😁) thank you to everyone who checked on me during those chaotic travels 😮‍💨🫶🏾 i’m glad to be back & in one peace. i’m feeling inspired! there’s more rest to share 😌💆🏾‍♀️🦶🏾💫

🍵🌿 The Before - The Part IV My understanding of “helping people” evolved almost immediately once I entered massage school. Very quickly, I learned what it meant to receive — getting on the table (even when I didn’t want to.) Sitting with stillness I had been avoiding. Moving through unexpected emotional breakthroughs. I learned how to give from a place of compassion and curiosity — and how to offer 70–80% when 100% felt unsustainable. Over time, my relationship with the work shifted from performing to providing. I began to notice how much tension and pent-up emotion I was holding myself — and I was only eighteen. That realization alone put so much into perspective. At the time, most of my friends in Kentucky were in college. They were under constant stress, mental strain, and pressure. They became my weekly practice sessions. Sometimes just ten minutes of scalp massage would knock them out completely. It taught me that there is no hierarchy of pain - stress doesn’t discriminate. There is no comparison. Every body carries something. #bodyworkbymarissa #restisapractice #thewhybehindthework #brooklynmassagetherapist

🍵🌿The Before - Part III When my mom decided to leave our small town in Ohio, she relocated to Louisville, Kentucky during my senior year of high school. After graduating, my sister and I joined her. Very shortly after, I weighed my options carefully and decided not to enroll in college. I didn’t believe in going into debt for education and my scholarship would only cover a few semesters. So I looked into trades. Massage therapy appeared almost immediately. At the time, I thought:
I’m still helping people — just through the body instead of words. What I didn’t realize yet was how deeply emotional this work would become — and how much listening it would require. #bodyworkbymarissa #thewhybehindthework #restoverrush

🍵🌿 The Before - Part II I was always fascinated by how people think. Psychology. Sociology. Originally, I thought I would further my studies in both - drawn to the unending curiosity of how our world moves. The way we’re wired individually — and how those differences shape the collective. I was always drawn to artistic expression, especially music.
To quiet rituals before they had names.
Long baths. Going slow. Undistracted time & attention. A sensory refuge. I was often called “old” or “boring” for loving these things lol
But looking back, everything I was drawn to lived in the space between sensation, emotion & thought. This was a sense of freedom to me - freedom from constant doing, mental urgency. Thanks to stillness, I was already listening 🌿✨ #bodyworkbymarissa #restoverrush #thewhybehindthework #slowitdown
