Victor H. Green’s Green Book (1936) helped Black Americans navigate the country during the Jim Crow era. 💚 In “Safe Travels”, the mural follows Black families traveling across a Los Angeles road map. On the left, a family prepares to depart. Throughout the piece, LA’s highways stretch across the surface, with the 110 Freeway transforming into a blackberry branch—referencing The Blacker the Berry by Wallace Thurman, a novel that exposed the harsh realities Black Americans faced at the time. The mural features traveling musicians Billie Holiday and Charlie Parker. Below them is the historic Dunbar Hotel, located just six blocks from the mural, where they once shared stages alongside other historic Black jazz artists. To the right, a family arrives at their destination, while a portrait of Victor Green is framed within the original Green Book title page. 🖼️ This piece is a reflection on resilience, ingenuity, and honoring the legacy of the Green Book and its role leading into the Civil Rights Movement. I hope the mural teaches future audiences of creative ways of protecting each other against adversity. The Fire Station 5 mural is almost complete, @bodeckluna is finishing up today 👏 This mural reflects the landscape and stories that define the neighborhood. Rolling hills, redwood trees, and Bay Area sunsets form the backdrop, with local flowers—selected by the community—woven throughout the design. The composition includes tributes to Gunn High School and Fletcher Middle School, the Fire Station 5 bell, and the chilis grown onsite by firefighters for their hot sauce. Perry the donkey from Barron Park appears alongside the city’s oldest fire truck, and a subtle computer cursor references Palo Alto’s role in innovation. An apricot sun nods to the “Valley of Heart’s Delight,” while Juana Briones overlooks Barron Creek. Fire engine trim frames the corners, honoring the dedication of the firefighters who serve this community. Created with community input, the mural brings together local history, identity, and everyday life in Palo Alto.

New mural coming soon to Fire Station 5! California-based artist @bodeckluna has been commissioned to create a site-specific mural for the roll-up door at Fire Station 5 in Barron Park, Palo Alto. Developed through conversations with Fire Department staff and community input, the design draws inspiration from the neighborhood’s history and character, celebrating its strong sense of place and community spirit. Seen here is a rendering of the large-scale mural. The artist will be onsite painting beginning February 26!

Happy Mother’s Day Mommy! It’s been 55 days since you’ve transitioned and I’ve finally taken a break from working. I will never forget how tightly you held my hand during your final days. As you’ve mentioned before, a lot could be said about a person and what they do with their hands. And I’ll always remember you peeling crabs for me when I was a toddler. Those hands of yours have helped me through so much homework, birthdays, even making your immaculate cooking during heart breaks and sick days. I also know that you’ve spent your happiest days caring for my nephew and nieces. When I miss you I just look at them and see pieces of you through their laughter, words, embrace and resilience. When you left, I felt the world was suddenly covered in ice and that I had to learn how to walk again. But that’s not the case now. I’ve learned to walk with infinite gratitude and pride knowing you’ve raised us. I even went to Mt Fuji with you like I promised! As a prayer warrior, you’ve set the bar so high on loving unconditionally and I’ll continue to love others as you have with endless compassion for family, friends and community. I’m so honored to have lived this life with you as a mother and thank you for constantly praying over us as we’ve gained the kindest, sincerest, and funniest guardian angel anyone can ask for. 💚🦋

Congratulations to artist @bodeckluna whose conceptual design for the Fire Station 5 mural (600 Arastradero Road) was approved by the Public Art Commission last Thursday night. The design for the mural is inspired by the artist's conversations with the @paloaltofire personnel and community members, site visits, and his research about the unique history and character of the Barron Park neighborhood.
