Upcoming | Thero Makepe solo exhibition at JAVETT UP Congratulations to @theromakepe on his upcoming solo exhibition at @javett_up (Tshwane/Pretoria, South Africa), titled ‘We Didn't Choose to be Born Here’. Curated by @stormjvr , ‘We Didn’t Choose to be Born Here’ will run from 14 May 2026 - 15 February 2027. Thero Makepe (b. 1996, Gaborone, Botswana) is a visual artist whose practice reflects on personal and societal narratives of his upbringing in Botswana and South Africa. Makepe’s contributions to the contemporary photographic tradition have since earned numerous prestigious awards and residencies, among them: Upcoming: Headlands Artist Residency (2026), pH Museum Photobook Award (2025), Joop Swart Masterclass with World Press Photo (2025), British Journal of Photography Award at FORMAT25 (2025), Prince Claus Seed Award (2024), Fotografiemuseum Amsterdam - FOAM Talent (2024-2025), MEP – Collection Gervanne + Matthias Leridon Collection - Cité internationale des arts Residency (2023), The Claire and Edoardo Villa Will Trust (2022), Blurring the Lines Finalist (2020), Simon Gerson Prize (2019), The Diane & Charles Frankel Fellowship, and the Tierney Fellowship Award (2019). Makepe’s œuvre has received significant critical recognition, with features in publications including Aperture, British Journal of Photography, Contemporary&, FOAM Magazine, Courrier international, Aesthetica Magazine, Metal Magazine, and Booooooom. Senzeni Marasela at the 61st Venice Biennale, In Minor Keys. ✦ Seven large-scale textile works suspended through the full height of the Arsenale — red wool hand-stitched onto tjali, mixed-fabric ceremonial blankets. Each title names a South African mining disaster: location, year, lives lost. The stitch patterns trace the slopes of collapsed mines. Cloth as cartography. Waiting made monumental. ‘A long line of hot assumptions’ | A solo exhibition by Rirhandzu Vermeulen | 29 April - 30 June 2026 ‘A long line of hot assumptions’ is Vermeulen’s alchemical work of transforming the many restrictions and projections externally imposed on her womanhood into mythologies of self: reclaiming these sites of ordeal, and wielding them as both weapon and shield. Through ‘A long line of hot assumptions’, Vermeulen asserts her right to define herself, actively constructing her identity on her own terms. THE ARTISTS ARE PRESENT & SCREENING OF SOLARIS | Saturday, 11 April, from 3 pm We warmly invite you to Karl-Marx-Allee and look forward to exploring the exhibition together with you and the artists. Following the afternoon in the presence of the exhibiting artists, the program of Janos Bergob’s and Tim Vormbäumen’s VHS video installation All the World Will Be Your Enemy will be switched, and from 5:30 PM Solaris will be screened. Kay Lotte Pommer paints in, on, and with metal and glass. Delicate figures cut through wall pieces made of steel, metal, and glass, while fleetingly placed traces contrast in their fragile movement with the stability of their supporting materials. Pommer collects such traces in everyday life. She reads the city as a legible network of surfaces, materials, and objects in which actions and time inscribe themselves. The works shown in the exhibition examine, through this urban archive, the production of signs in urban space. Signs as clues, remnants, and visual traces, but also in the metaphysical, imperative sense that instructs, directs, or prohibits actions. The curtains were drawn for the wonderful opening of (ZIEH MIR DEN) ZAHN DER ZEIT On view until April 25 with works by Elias Binder, Isabelle Heske, Karim Hussein, Simay Keles, Kay Lotte Pommer, Anja Rausch, Pepi Schikowski, Tim Vormbäumen SIMAY KELES Simay Keles‘ work moves between figuration and abstraction, depending on the series she is working on. The exhibition features works from her recent series Sunset Express Tours & Travels, which comprises two-layered mixed media paintings that are dedicated to those who have left their places of birth or long to leave for various reasons. She applies a sculptural approach to the canvas, as the spatial displacements resulting from the two layers create visual confusion, optical illusions and an unconventional perception of spaces.  In a concept attempting to be as open as possible, we invited artists to show their work and present their practice without having set a curatorial framework, or requirements in terms of content, material or media. A snapshot of the present, mapping parallel paths and opposite outlooks, searching for uniting factors where none were prescribed.
