We uncovered this beautiful woven image when we sorted through Dads things a few years ago. It’s about half a metre square. We’d never seen it before. My Uncle Ray picked it up in Egypt in 1941, probably as a present for my Nanna. 15 years ago I made contact with an old battalion mate of his and he sent me some amazing photos. The first shows Ray and he as fresh recruits (Ray central standing and Jack kneeling in front), then in Palestine, Egypt and finally a studio portrait in Tel Aviv, after months in Tobruk. He spent over 4 years in the Army, more than half in Nth Africa and New Guinea, and a lot of it in hospitals. I remember him as a lovely, kind, funny gentle man who could wiggle his ears to make kids laugh. Lest we forget #anzacs #anzacday #ww2 #australianarmy #anzac your Grandpa @lucawalsh !

It’s hard to ignore the first anniversary of a major holiday and this one was so special for us as we reunited with one Son, met up with special family peeps @fabadab and met long lost family for the first time. A minute and a half isn’t long enough to squeeze in the beauty of our 1300km trip to the the Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides and back but here goes. Absolutely stunning landscapes, lots of hospitality and oral history from my Cuz’s @derek_pluto and Roddy Murray, we miss you guys. 40 years ago this month this gangly 23yr old had returned to London from Christmas is the Lakes District and NYE in Edinburgh with two carloads of compatriots. The start of term two at North London Polytechnic and working in Kensington. Life was pretty good, I was living in my single bed broom cupboard in Notting Hill Gate next door to the Queen Fan Club, rubbed shoulders with Brian May and Lou Reed and bought my veges in Portobello Road. Saw Stop Making Sense at the Electric Cinema there as well. Winter was great cos It snowed pretty often in London. These photos are from our late summer travels six months before in Italy. Early summer in South East Queensland hits suddenly- there’s a distinct shift in the weather with very hot humid days building up to severe late afternoon storms that usually pass by quickly. This sub tropical climate demands a specific Architectural response- highly insulated roof and walls, big overhangs to keep the sun out and off the glass, walls and floor during the day, and lots of big openings and variable glazing to give plenty of options to open or close up depending on the weather direction. This allows the house to be trimmed like a sailboat to perform best. Purge any residual heat with cool breezes. Who needs aircon? @standrewsconstructions and all the skilled trades who take such care with their work.

40 years ago last month as a gangly 23yr old I left Australia for the first time with two friends from Uni. We arrived in a windy Athens in late Summer at dawn after a quick Singapore stopover. I remember the light and air was totally different from home and I was hooked. These photos are from our travels to the Triumvirate of Mykonos, Ios and Santorini when George Micheal was No.1. Mykonos was 8 hours by slow ferry from Athens and Santorini a numbing 12 hours, but they were still packed and with no where to stay we slept on the beach. I’m happy to let these places live in my memory, but if you were going to visit the Adriatic or Aegean Seas in May 2026, where would you go? Please let me know.
