It was only 24 hours but we made the most of it. Last night Jim spent the evening BBQing with me and my family. We got to catch up on some lost time, and today he came to school. Within a matter of minutes, my Investigative Journalism students were locked in on every word he said. I could only dream of them hanging on MY every word like that 😂 That was followed by an Advisory Board meeting, and of course I couldn’t let him leave without recording a podcast (available Sunday). Great friends are hard to find. I feel very blessed to have one like Jim.
Ten years of friendship in on picture. The shot that lives on my studio wall was taken in 2016, when I visited @realjimclemente ‘s house in LA. Today he dropped by to visit me and my family at my house in Michigan. During the decade in between Jim has been a colleague, a mentor and most importantly a friend.
Of course we never let a good opportunity pass us by. While he’s here, we’ll be turning on the mics and recording. Patrons, check the Patreon app for a link to a special live stream, tomorrow (Monday) at 3:30pm EDT. Audio version will be available to everyone on Sunday.
The conversation in S18: E18 of Truth & Justice drifted into all sorts of interesting topics. @bobrufftruth and @dwaynebetts even took a time out for an S.A. Cosby #bookclub chat.
Today’s episode of Truth & Justice features an incredibly interesting and complex discussion between @bobrufftruth and @dwaynebetts Dwayne spent nearly 9 years in prison, where books were treated as contraband. After his release, Dwayne became a poet, writer and attorney. He graduated from Yale Law School, and ultimately founded Freedom Reads. He now provides custom curated libraries to prisons all over the country.
On the left is December 30th. 3 years and 3 months into my “cut”. Over 3 years of deficit calories, tracking macros, and strength training. 1500 calories a day. 30% protein, 50% carbs (yes you can eat carbs and lose weight. Don’t buy into the bullshit. Carbs give you energy and feed your muscles), 20% fat. Over those 40 months I lost 140 pounds. I’m 199 in that picture. Down from 340 in 2022. That pic marks the day I hit my first goal. Get under 200 pounds.
Next comes the shift in mindset and training. My motivator…my “why” isn’t about looking good or body building or running marathons. This may seem strange but what saved my life is elk hunting. Hiking and climbing at 10,000 feet, while carrying 100 pounds of meat on your back requires peak health and physical fitness. Phase one is tear the garbage off of my body to get to clean slate. Phase 2 is carefully building a hiking, climbing, packing machine.
The pic on the right is 3 months into phase two. March 30th. 3 months of a slight surplus. 2400 calories a day. 160 grams of protein. 280 carbs (EAT THE CARBS!), 75 grams of fat. Heavier strength training. Pushing to failure on nearly every set. Compound movements that cross the midline. Everything is functional and designed to prepare me for October. My workouts don’t look “normal”. I get a lot of weird looks at the gym. In this pic I’m now 205 pounds. The scale shows I’ve gained 6 pounds in 3 months. I’m gaining slowly and carefully, maintaining flexibility and mobility.
Possible takeaways:
1. Put a shirt on, no one wants to see you naked. I don’t care.
2. I’m inspired that a person pushing 50 years old can do this without spending money on fad workouts and diets.
3. EAT THE CARBS! Seriously. You’ve been lied to for decades. Athletes & bodybuilders eat carbs. Don’t follow ppl who have never been where you want to go.
Because I know most ppl don’t care about my fitness stuff, I made another acct where I’ll be posting my training from now thru Oct. Not selling. Just a space to follow if u actually are interested so I don’t spam u here. Follow @fit4wild for my mountain training journey.
