Yesterday was a bit different… I left the dogs at home and headed out for a soggy day on the moors 🌧️🐾
I joined a volunteer day organised by the Eastern Moors Partnership and the BMC, and 15 of us planted a whopping 5,400 sphagnum plugs on Burbage Moor 💚🌱 Rewetting and restoring the peatland might not look glamorous, but it’s such important work for carbon storage, biodiversity and keeping our moors healthy.
We got properly wet, muddy and a little bit cold… but regular breaks for tea and biscuits kept morale high ☕🍪 There’s something quite brilliant about standing in the drizzle, dripping wet, surrounded by good people having a laugh.
After a busy few days with lots of people around, it was actually the perfect kind of therapy for me, quiet, purposeful time outside, listening to the team chatting away while I got stuck into planting.
Definitely up for doing it again 🙌 The next volunteer day is 22nd February if anyone fancies getting muddy for a good cause, let me know and I’ll share the details! 💚
🔥Let's protect the moors before the spark. Now hiring!
We’re proud to be funding the first ever dedicated Wildfire Ranger for the Peak District’s Eastern Moors, working to protect much-loved climbing and walking areas like Froggatt, Curbar and Burbage.
Wildfire has already devastated over 50 football pitches of moorland here in the last two years. In a changing climate, prevention is everything. This new role will patrol high-risk areas, engage visitors, support volunteers and help stop wildfires before they start.
📢 Now hiring!
Know someone perfect for this role? The Wildfire Ranger job application is now live! 🔗 Link in bio
Applications close 8 February. Please share far and wide.
Together, we can help protect these special places for wildlife, climate and everyone who loves being outdoors.

Help us raise £50,000 for this iconic climbing hut 🛖

This fundraiser will help fund sustainable upgrades such as:
⭐ Better insulation
⭐ Improved energy efficiency
⭐ Upgrade water pumps
⭐ Replace broken tiles
⭐ Enhance experience of comfort
A building with real heritage like this deserves careful work upgrades so it can be enjoyed for decades to come.
If you care about climbing history, hut culture, or giving future climbers the same unforgettable experience, please consider donating or sharing this fundraiser..

🎵 Old oak trees, it’s just plain to see, you need space to breathe, and then you will thrive!
Thanks to the great work of BMC volunteers, @mt_association and @nationaltrust in the heart of the Upper Derwent Valley, oak trees were given a fighting chance. Oak trees - who support perhaps the largest number of other species in the woodlands - struggle to compete with the fast-growing birches.
By carefully clearing space, our volunteers are helping these biodiversity powerhouses to breathe 🫁
While it didn’t immediately feel good to be killing these living trees, @peakdistrictnt informed the volunteers about the natural process in woodlands before humans came along was for large animals, mostly herbivores (now absent in the UK), to crash about breaking and felling some trees as they went, thereby creating these clearances that we were now manually creating in their absence and a mosaic of denser and more open areas would have been the norm.
Want to get involved? More conservation volunteering opportunities are coming up this autumn and winter in the Peak District. Check out the BMC volunteering page via the link in our bio 🔝
