Ghost Nets and Abandoned Fishing Gear damage marine life long after they are dropped.
These nets can travel hundreds of kilometres entrapping wildlife along the way, and once they reach reefs they cause even more irreparable damage to the corals and sea floor.
It took 2 dives for our team to carefully remove this net which was found a Shark Island. Each piece needing to be untangled from the coral to ensure no more damage was done to the reef.
Along with removing any nets we can, we survey & report all the abandoned fishing gear we find to MARsCI - the Marine Citizen Science Initiative - a collaborative project between the Aow Thai Marine Ecology Center, IUCN Asia and the Department of Marine and Coastal Resources of Thailand. This data then helps record the location and quantity of derelict and discarded fishing gear in Thai waters along with evaluating the effect on benthic and pelagic flora and fauna in the region.

The silky shark (Carcharhinus falciformis) is a highly migratory, fast-swimming oceanic species found in tropical and subtropical waters globally. Named for its uniquely smooth, soft hide, it is an opportunistic predator heavily associated with tuna schools, drifting objects, and deep offshore reefs.
Key Characteristics & AnatomyThe “Silk” Effect: Unlike the famously rough, sandpaper-like skin of many sharks, the silky shark gets its name from its incredibly small and densely packed dermal denticles (scales), which give it a remarkably smooth, silky texture
Size: On average, they grow to about \(8.2\) ft (\(2.5\) m) in length, but the largest recorded females can reach \(11.5\) ft (\(3.5\) m) and weigh up to \(763\) lbs (\(346\) kg).
Habitat & BehaviorGlobal Range: They are widely distributed throughout the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans. Juveniles usually reside in shallower coastal waters and nurseries, while adults prefer the open pelagic zones and deep offshore drops.
Diet: They feed primarily on bony fish (especially tuna, mackerel, and mullet) and cephalopods like squid. They are known to use their keen sense of smell and electro-sensory organs (the Ampullae of Lorenzini) to locate and even herd schools of fish. The Tuna Connection: Silky sharks are famous for closely following massive schools of tuna, sometimes altering their own migratory patterns to stay near these fish for easy foraging
ReproductionLifespan & Maturity: They have an estimated lifespan of up to \(22\) to \(25+\) years. They grow slowly and take about \(5\) to \(15\) years to reach sexual maturity.Gestation: They are viviparous—they give birth to live pups that develop through a placenta inside the mother. Gestation takes about 12 months, resulting in litters of roughly 2 to 14 pups.
Vulnerable Population: The IUCN Red List classifies the silky shark as Vulnerable.

Most things on the reef are trying to disappear‼️
This one is doing the exact opposite, every detail dialled up like it wants to be seen, because being seen is the whole point.
💜 Those purple spots scattered across a white mantle, framed by a vivid orange border and matching gills makes that species very unique and special.
👀 I’d seen photos of Hypselodoris purpureomaculosa before but nothing prepared me for seeing one in person. This was the first time I ever filmed this species and I spent way longer hovering over it than I should have, but there’s something deeply satisfying about slowing down and just watching something this small be this visually precise.
💜 Every tiny detail worth every second.
