Ghost Nets and Abandoned Fishing Gear damage marine life long after they are dropped.
These nets can travel hundreds of kilometres entrapping wildlife along the way, and once they reach reefs they cause even more irreparable damage to the corals and sea floor.
It took 2 dives for our team to carefully remove this net which was found a Shark Island. Each piece needing to be untangled from the coral to ensure no more damage was done to the reef.
Along with removing any nets we can, we survey & report all the abandoned fishing gear we find to MARsCI - the Marine Citizen Science Initiative - a collaborative project between the Aow Thai Marine Ecology Center, IUCN Asia and the Department of Marine and Coastal Resources of Thailand. This data then helps record the location and quantity of derelict and discarded fishing gear in Thai waters along with evaluating the effect on benthic and pelagic flora and fauna in the region.

On Thursdays our staff, interns and volunteers join together to clean Koh Tao’s beaches!
Everything we pick up is logged on the @oceanconservancy CleanSwell App, the largest database of land cleanups globally.
✔️ Cleaning up trash ✔️ Stopping waste from entering our ocean ✔️ Collecting important data to make large scale policy change.
If your visiting Koh Tao just turn up at @crystaldivekohtao at 09.30 any Thursday to join in!

CoralWatch 🪸👀
Every week we conduct CoralWatch surveys to help us understand the bleaching patterns on Koh Taos reefs!
Is the bleaching starting earlier? Later? Lasting longer that normal? What is the recovery rate? So many questions that can be answered from a simple survey that utilises Citizen Science and accessibility of information!

Helping the next generation learn and get involved in coral restoration. Getting them out of the classroom and giving them hands on experience - it may not hit them yet, but they’ve helped our coral reefs. These “spiders” will go into the ocean and @realcoraltribe will help transplant coral fragments onto them to rebuild the reef. Every little bit counts.

My second time round doing a marine conservation internship @realcoraltribe in Koh Tao, and no 2 days are the same. You get to dive with a purpose and do things on land - all with the aim of helping our planet and marine life. It’s the best kind of trip. It never gets old and is always fulfilling. 😊 definitely something to put on your bucket list!
Most people do it for several weeks - but luckily the minimum is 1 week. So works out for people like me who can’t be away too long from their job or their kiddos - but who love diving and are interested in doing more then just a fun dive. A small chance to get a taste of marine conservation work 😊

Meet our recent Coral Tribe intern Viktoria!
Joining us in data collection, artificial reef creation & maintenance, clean ups & plastic recycling and much more, she may have finished her internship but her hard work has left a great lasting impression on our marine environment! 🫧🐠

Sometimes we forget just how lucky we are.
When it’s your everyday, the ocean can start to feel normal. But every now and then, you stop, look around, and it hits you again just how incredible it really is… and that this is our office.
It puts things into perspective.
Because at the end of the day, we’re only ever guests out here and it deserves to be treated with respect.

Safari Dives 🪸🐠
On Fridays the Coral Tribe interns embark on a Safari dive, a time to take in, observe and appreciate the underwater environment they have spent the week protecting!
Last week at Southwest Pinnacle we were tested to big schools of barracuda and snappers along with the stunning reef 🐟

The ocean can look crystal clear and still be in trouble. 🌊
That’s why we test it.
Salinity. Oxygen. Nutrients. Phosphates,Turbidity. Temperature.
These numbers tell the real story of reef health. Every sample we collect helps us understand what our reefs are facing and how we can protect them.
Conservation starts with data. And every data point matters.

🤿 Jansom Bay: Deeper Clean — and a Deeper Conversation.
.
This morning, Jennifer and the Coral Tribe team went below the surface of Jansom Bay — snorkels, mesh bags, care.
.
What came up from the water? A lost snorkel. Some fishing line. A scrap of plastic. Fishing rods. Some organic matters. For a bay this active, that's a quiet triumph.
.
But something else happened on the shore.
.
After the dive, Jennifer's team gathered around our BetterFly Black Soldier Fly station — right here on the beach — and the conversation got interesting. How does it work? What does it process? How can it connect to a dive operation?
.
That's the thing about Charm Churee Villa. People come to give, and they leave with ideas.
.
A clean bay above and below. A waste system that turns organic matter into life.
Partners who dive deep in every sense of the word.
Thank you Coral Tribe — for the cleanup, and for the curiosity. 🌊🪲
