NO CAKE. NO ENTRY.
3 GENERATIONS. 3 CAKES. 1 CAKE PICNIC.
I still remember the moment I became captivated by the Cake Picnic.
Like many of you, it was a typical Friday night doing laundry and dishes after my 5 year old had gone to bed.
I stopped to scroll Insta and saw
@jumbledonline post about the original San Francisco Cake Picnic.
I was instantly mesmerised by the rows of beautifully decorated cakes and decided in that moment that I was going to go to a Cake Picnic.
Fast forward 11 months and 66 hours of planning, baking, decorating and driving, and I had made it!
Not only did I get to the Melbourne’s own Cake Picnic, but I went:
- with my amazing Mum and my now 6yo daughter,
- took 3 cakes covered in our world first Freeze Dried Edible Flowers,
- AND… 🥁 met the original creator of the
@cakepicnictour , Elisa of
@saltedrye !
It was everything and more than what I dreamt it would be!
Here are a few more highlights:
- My “Cake Picnic” cake was featured on
@broadsheet_melb and
@cakepicnictour with nearly 9k likes and over 2,000 shares!
-
@misstrixiedrinkstea loving our freeze dried edible flowers.
- A special invite to the VIP area where we dined on cake and dilmah iced tea under stripey umbrellas in the botanic gardens.
- Surprising myself by how much I enjoyed doing 2 media interviews after zero practise in 5 years.
So many people to thank, but the biggest thank you’s must go to my amazing Mum and daughter. Who else would put up with my crazy antics and all-nighters?!
When the three of us piled into the car at midnight to drive to Melbourne I wondered if it was worth it. What should have taken 4 hours, took nearly 6 as I slowed down for everyone bump and pothole on our rough bush roads with 3 delicate cakes on board.
I was reminded of my last all-night road trip with my Mum and my then 4yo daughter when I towed a new 2 tonne steel contraption (freeze drier) home.
Were both all-nighters worth it?
Abso-lutely! Not only for the amazing people I met, but for showing my daughter that anything is possible if you just keep going and never stop.
Let me know if you’ve been to a Cake Picnic or you’re inspired to go to one.
