They’re carving a lane for contributors to eat healthy in a $4 trillion AI revolution. The competition ain’t moving like this—not for Black and Brown content creators. Let’s lead by example, not follow.

My first intro to photography came way before I knew it could be a real career. Now, knowing what’s possible—that’s the foundation. Young minds need vision, but once you see it, you gotta have the tools and the doors open to really build on it. This isn't just a one-step thing; it’s multi-layered.

Tune in to Episode 85 where we speak with Karen Williams (@blackvisualqueen ), a Los Angeles based editor, about taking the Alternate Path in photography. She provides a candid look at the photography industry. This episode pulls back the curtain on the photography industry as Karen shares how she found her path to success. Here are some key points of the conversation: The underrepresentation of people of color in photography. Karen discusses her organization, Black Visual Queen, which empowers photographers of color and fights for industry inclusion. Karen emphasizes the importance of artistic focus. By honing your unique style and building a strong portfolio niche, you can attract clients who resonate with your vision. Photography education often overlooks business essentials like contracts and licensing. Karen advocates for curriculum reform to equip photographers with the skills to thrive. The conversation acknowledges the challenges, but emphasizes the importance of passion. Embrace every role as a learning opportunity and never lose sight of your creative spark. Open communication and respecting boundaries are paramount for a successful photographer-editor relationship. The job market is changing. Be prepared to pivot, embrace new experiences, and maintain a positive, solution-oriented attitude to navigate your creative journey. Karen overcame the pressure to conform to Corporate America to forge her path, driven by a desire for diversity and education in the photography industry. Despite graduating with a photography degree, she found her calling in photo editing after exploring different aspects of the field. This episode is a must-listen for anyone considering a photography career, offering valuable insights and honest advice for navigating the path less traveled.
