The Blk Out Boulderfest logo was inspired by the Pan-African flag which was created in 1920 to represent people of the African Diaspora and to symbolize black liberation in the United States.
We worked with @jitterbug_art to help realize this vision and we can’t thank her enough for this beautiful work of art. We wanted an abstract outdoor boulder with indoor holds in the form of the Black power fist using the pan-African colors. Here is a breakdown of the meaning behind those colors:
❤️Red: the blood that unites all people of Black African ancestry, and shed for liberation;
🖤Black: for the people whose existence as a nation, though not a nation-state, is affirmed by the existence of the flag;
💚Green: the abundant and vibrant natural wealth of Africa, the Motherland.
Our use of these colors is about continuing the fight towards justice and liberation for Black people, particularly in the climbing and outdoor industry.

When you pull up to the climbing festival and it appears you have a truck twinsie somewhere at the festival 👀. The next day, you meet your truck twinsie ("meet" used very loosely here -- I'd been wondering who owned the truck and, while walking to mine, saw him rummaging around in his. I walked up behind him & said "AH, so YOU'RE my truck twin! Turns out he'd been wondering the same. From there, we began chatting about our favorite features. 😂)
Turns out, not only does your truck twin have great taste in trucks (obviously) -- they're also a cool human! So.. naturally.. you & your truck twinsie have an impromptu photo-shoot to end the weekend (he suggested we take matching truck pictures & I could not have been mooore excited to oblige, haha!).
Thank you, BLK OUT Fest (Tiffany) for bringing together the most 💣 human beings all in one space. In times like these, "joy is an act of defiance" -- & there was plenty of it to go around this past weekend. Thanks for creating the space for me to "fill my cup" back up. I didn't realize how much I needed it. I'll be sure to now "pay it forward" and share with others who need it too. ✨️🖤

“We Been Out Here” is a documentary series that centered in Black experience in outdoor spaces across the U.S. who have long held deep, enduring relationships with the outdoors—farmers, horse trainers, hikers, climbers, birders, anglers, rafters, foragers, and more. From elders to youth, professionals to hobbyists, it captures the rich spectrum of Black outdoor life with the intention to reshape narratives of Blackness in the American outdoors.
