Poulenc/Sondheim at Merkin Hall on April 7– what a night! Bénédicte Jourdois, Theo Hoffman, and Christine Price just killin’ it. As for Poulenc and Sondheim, they seemed made for one other, like Dijon and pastrami….

Meetings with remarkable men: this past Saturday, I had a chance to thank Michael Spyres for his superb performance of Tristan with a signed copy of my book, “From Ear to Ear.” (He appears in it, briefly.) Michael is one of the greatest singers I have ever heard, and my brief collaboration with him in 2023 was a career highlight. It takes cojones to sing Tristan, especially opposite the torrential Isolde of Lise Davidson, but Michael brought plenty of volume, as well as bel canto grace, to Wagner’s music. I admire him very deeply.

🎶 MUSIC MONDAY | “A’tini nnaya… give me the flute and sing” from our March 2023 performance. This hauntingly beautiful song, *A’tini nnaya (Give me the flute and sing)*, brings together the music of Najib Hankash and the timeless poetry of Khalil Gibran, meditation on simplicity, nature, and the freedom of the soul. Performed by the radiant Maggie Reneé, with Yihao Zhou and Steven Blier at the piano, and Gammi Eom, this piece invites us to slow down, breathe, and listen deeply. ✨ Let the music carry you somewhere quiet today.
