“I was in Havana, Cuba a few years ago. I was walking around with a friend near the Malecon, by the harbour in Havana, with my Soviet Zenit SLR. There was a man sitting nearby with his friend, who would not have noticed me otherwise except for my camera. He pointed at me and asked ‘Zenit?’. Turns out he used to have one himself, and we got chatting for a little while which was really lovely. And ultimately, this is what film photography is all about to me - creating genuine connections between people of all sorts of backgrounds.
“And I really despise the proliferation of AI generated images, text and videos online. It poses a grave risk to art. It’s creating so much doubt on which images are real and which are fake, and further drives the misinformation epidemic that we’re living through. But you can’t ChatGPT a negative! “I’ve used a digital camera and I’m more or less ambivalent towards it. I don’t find it a total foil of film photography, but it has less soul in it. And when I say soul, I mean the ability to have one’s self in the photo. Not physically, but as an input. Film makes you grapple with subject material and the camera itself in a different way.
“Artificial Intelligence will never supplant photography or any of the arts really if what we care about remains relevant to the human experiences, not the experience of commodity. The world we live in feeds on constant interaction with the internet. It creates the abrasion of disconnection which keeps us online as well, so to triumph over this technology, if I can call it that, would be to remind ourselves what is greater and to become responsible for using AI in intelligent ways, not to placate the algorithmic behaviors we are all encircled by.
“That’s what’s beautiful about film. It limits the impulse so the act of creation is contingent on those heightened senses through blocking. It’s like closing your eyes so you can hear better. I become more attuned to my environment and the people within it, and to my own psyche and emotions. I’ve been cajoled and throttled and even spat on but I’ve also had really great conversations with people and made friends, and a few enemies. It’s all about the exploration, it’s all about having that osmosis with the real world and letting it filter through the lens.” @kosmasacco
