Water photographers are a different breed. While anyone can set up a tripod on shore and document the action from a safe distance, swimming in the impact zone is a whole different art form. San Diego-based photographer @blarrel regularly swims out on the best days at Blacks to capture incredible images like this one here of local charger Eric Snortum 🔥🔥 Tap the link in bio our full interview with this dedicated and talented Southern California lensman at Surfer.com ✍️: @_grateful_chris
1AM moonlit bioluminescence in the dark of the canyon with @nickmccall_ . I’ve been thinking of making this work since the last big bloom in 2020. From watching it since then, I was convinced that the algae bloom only comes around when there’s not much swell, cloudy, onshore waves. Dead wrong.
A perfect window at the start of Wednesday in the dead of night with offshore winds, low tide, big building NW groundswell, clear sky, near full moon. Not a single soul out.
A vivid shooting star from the top of the sky to the horizon during the surf check. Pelicans were circling us, fish jumping, dolphins, cold water, yelling and hooting at each other in the dark. Getting cleaned up by canyon sets building throughout the session. Glowing exhaustion.
Fear of the dark persists, but a session like this makes the horrifyingly big days feel just a little easier. 💧🌕🦈

Confusion in the clouds. Big bright formations in the dead of the dark. Lit up not by the moon nor the street. Stars visible. A pulse of water. A whisper. Each cloud begins to morph faster and faster. Enter the storm cell. Along with the beauty it brings in the dark, as the light comes it awakens a rush. An addicting hit of deep tones. Winds cutting against the face of wave and skin. The cell passes, leaving a craving. More storms.
A simple splash in the ocean. A dolphin breaches three times, each time: big air. Moonlight behind the clouds, no sign of sunlight in sight. A lack of contrast in the dark. 1/160s f1.2 iso2000. A final realization on the end of the third breach that the focus won’t lock on the dolphin. A Hail Mary attempt at focusing on the light pollution of SIO. Focus lock. Just a splash. Next time.
Playing chicken with the winds. The bliss of windows in the storm. The quiet grunge, taken for granted. Only the sound of wind chimes and tinnitus. More storms. Less whatever it has been. ⛈️
A few frames taken from the knoll. Missing this viewpoint a lot. Almost six years now that it’s been locked! Will this be the year that it opens? @thecaliforniacoast ⛰️🌊
A blissful dynamic destruction. Psychedelic spit room. Empty face with Parker. Last bit of cinematic light with Mike. TP without the BS. Cut into the chunky pocket.
