Honored and humbled to join The Laundromat Community as the 2025 Bed-Stuy Artist-in-Residence! Using an intergenerational and creative approach, my residency is an opportunity to foster relationships between Black Brooklyn elder organizers and NY-based members of
@blackmemoryworkers to center these elders and their stories and support them in the collective stewardship of their histories.
In prioritizing care over capital and reputation, this effort documents Black Brooklyn history and strengthens the intergenerational Black memory work ecosystem. Overjoyed to be able to do and be supported in this work. #collectivestewardship #blackmemoryworkers #collectiveremembrance

@laundromat_proj Collective remembrance means nurturing our kinfolk. 🫱🏾🫲🏽
BK elders, kids, neighbors, and artists: where do our memories live? What potential can we unlock when we remember the stories of us…together?
🎉 Meet Zakiya Collier (she/they), our 2025 Bed-Stuy AiR!
🌱 Zakiya Collier’s “Collective Remembrance” archival project is a dynamic, creative, multigenerational approach to stewarding the legacy of Black Brooklyn. The project fosters relationships between the community elders of Bed-Stuy Restoration Corp. and local Black archivists to preserve the histories of Central Brooklyn and its Black communities.
Together, they will document collective memory through oral histories, archival training workshops, a co-curated exhibition, public panels, and a preserved digital archive.
An Afro-Carolinian archivist, memory worker, and educator, Zakiya’s research explores archival practices that recount the material conditions of Black and Indigenous life.
Follow Zakiya’s journey to learn how communal archiving practices nurture Black Brooklyn’s character, art, culture, and longevity. To learn more about the Bed-Stuy AiR program and meet our 2025 cohort, click the link in our bio!
