Happy 90th Birthday to the LEGENDARY Ms. Irma P. Hall [June 3, 1935]! 🎉🎈🎊 It is not an overstatement to say that Irma’s career is nothing short of ICONIC. Beyond all of the wonderful things she’s done throughout her career, Irma is an even more wonderful and amazing person. Of course, I know Irma from our time together on the film Soul Food. I met her as an 12-year-old boy whom she immediately treated like her grandson. Because of Soul Food, Irma would affectionately be known by so many as “Big Mama” and I, as her “favorite grandbaby” - ☺️ and she and I would be forever linked. I am honored to share not only the screen but a friendship with her. I briefly worked with Irma once more after Soul Food, but it would be over 20 years since then that she and I would finally get to see each other in person again. Most of you don’t know that for the past couple of years I’ve been in the process of directing a Soul Food Reunion documentary (yes, really! — I am suuuuuuper excited for you all to see this!!) and this afforded me the opportunity to visit Irma and her wonderful family a couple of years ago in Texas where she now resides. [Special thanks to her two lovely daughters @katt_bettye and Irma D. Crayton, who welcomed us into their home] Words can’t really express what this experience was like for me, but I’ll try. Her hugs and smile were as I remember them and being able to reminisce about that special time filming Soul Food almost 30 years ago is something that I will hold onto for dear life. We even sat at the table for a nice soul food-esque dinner and just enjoyed one another. I have included some pictures from that visit. I’ll wrap this up by saying people truly do come into your life for a reason, a season or a lifetime. Today, Gregory Hines would have turned 80 years old. 🤍 And there’s something beautifully fitting about his birthday falling on Valentine’s Day ❤️ — a day that represents love. Because that’s what he gave me - love. That’s what he gave us. Love of craft. Love of rhythm. Love of excellence. Love of self. There are certain artists who don’t just entertain you — they shape you. Gregory was that for me. The elegance. The professionalism. The joy. The way he carried Black excellence with both fire and grace. ✨ When he passed, I remember feeling like I had more time. Like there would be another conversation. Another lesson. Another moment. I only had a little over six years with him… but somehow it feels like so much longer. Because what he gave me — the standard, the discipline, the example — has lasted far beyond the time itself. As a kid, I didn’t have the language for what I was witnessing. I just knew I felt something. Pride. Possibility. Permission. He made artistry look disciplined. He made masculinity look fluid. He made excellence look normal. Eighty years feels monumental… and yet his rhythm and talent is timeless. 🕊️ Today I’m sitting with gratitude — and honoring that imprint the best way I know how. Birthdays have often become a moment of reflection for me—reflecting on where I’ve been, where I am, and where I’m still hoping to go. I think about the people I’ve lost 🕊️, the people who are still here ❤️, and the many lives that have intersected with mine along the way. This year feels especially heavy and especially sacred. At 42, I’m right between the ages of Kobe Bryant, who left us at 41, and Chadwick Boseman, who was 43 when we lost him. I’m approaching my mother’s age when she passed at 47. Those numbers sit with me. So do the names—people I loved personally and people I admired from afar. Their lives, their work, their impact remind me how precious and fragile time really is.⏳ I’ve been thinking a lot about my acting 🎭 career too—the highs that felt impossible, the lows that tested me, and everything in between. Every win, every setback, every lesson has shaped the man I am today. None of it was wasted. Above all, I feel grateful. 🙏🏾 Grateful to see another year. Grateful for the love I’ve received and continue to receive. Grateful for the birthday wishes, the encouragement, the friendships, and the community that’s grown with me over these 42 years—personally and professionally.
