Flatbush is losing two cultural staples. 💔 Lords Bakery and Fisherman’s Cove — longtime favorites that served generations of Brooklyn families — are officially closing their doors. For many residents, these weren’t just businesses. They were part of the neighborhood’s identity. From beef patties and coco bread to late-night meals and family traditions, these spots helped define Caribbean culture in Flatbush for decades. Now, another piece of old Brooklyn is disappearing as the neighborhood continues to change. What’s your favorite memory from Lords Bakery or Fisherman’s Cove? 👇🏾 #repost: @kokupuff #Flatbush #Brooklyn #NYC #CaribbeanCulture

Brooklyn residents from Flatbush and Crown Heights are irate that additional homeless shelters are being placed in their neighborhoods, a direct impact from the closure of the 30th Street Shelter, also known as Bellevue, in Manhattan. Dozens of residents attended the Community Board 14 meeting at Kings Theatre on May 6 to air their grievances over the proposed conversion of a hotel on 1024 Flatbush Ave. into a 130-bed shelter for single men. The shelter is slated to be operational as soon as this summer, making it the fourth Department of Homeless Services shelter located within 100 feet of supportive housing facility run by The Jewish Board and a 200-bed men’s shelter operated by Black Vets for Social Justice. Meanwhile, Crown Heights residents attended a raucous Community Board 9 meeting on Tuesday, as board members heard about the planned shelter at 169 Empire Blvd. Shelter operator Project Renewal said it plans to turn a Ramada Hotel into a 140-bed shelter for adult single men. This will be the sixth shelter in the neighborhood and it is also slated for summer operation. Click the link in our for full story. 🚆 The Interborough Express is one step closer to becoming reality. The MTA says the long-awaited transit project connecting Brooklyn and Queens is now officially in the design phase. The proposed 14-mile line would link up to 17 subway lines, the LIRR, and serve neighborhoods that currently lack direct transit connections. Officials say the IBX could cut commute times dramatically for thousands of New Yorkers traveling between boroughs — without having to pass through Manhattan. The project is expected to run along an existing freight rail corridor from Bay Ridge to Jackson Heights. #repost: @sashanycrealty #NYC #MTA #InterboroughExpress #Brooklyn

Over 10 years ago, Sherease Torain said she was simply enjoying a fun, successful post-college life when she suddenly found herself in an all-consuming legal battle to stop alleged fraudsters from taking her longtime family home in Crown Heights. Torain, the granddaughter of Ida Robinson who owned 964 Park Pl., said a group of real estate investors forged her grandmother’s signature, recorded the property’s deed, and took out a substantial loan against the property the family had owned since 1951. Torain, now 46, told BK Reader she has marched into four different courts about 30 times. She heads back to Kings County Supreme Court this week in yet another attempt to reclaim the deed to her family home. “This horror started when my grandmother was 93-years-old,” Torain, the founder of Black Homeowners Preservation Coalition, said to packed town hall meeting about deed theft in Bedford-Stuyvesant last week. “The superficial conversations stopped once the deed theft happened.” Click the link in our bio for full story. Over a dozen alleged gang members from Coney Island, aged 16 to 27, on Monday were indicted on various charges connected to 16 shootings in the borough that resulted in seven victims, including one who died of his injuries. Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez, together with New York City Police Commissioner Jessica S. Tisch, said there are 113 counts in the indictment against 15 defendants who are alleged members of two subsets of the 59 Brim Bloods in Coney Island known as “Fly Ooter Gang,” a.k.a., FOG, and “Koney Sides.” Charges include conspiracy to commit murder, conspiracy to possess weapons, murder, attempted murder, and related charges. The indictment stems from a police investigation that started in January 2024 that focused on the two gangs that operate out of several neighboring housing complexes in Coney Island. Governor Kathy Hochul on Thursday said an agreement has been reached with legislative leaders on key priorities of the $268 billion fiscal year 2027 state budget that includes a pied-à-terre tax program. Five weeks late, the proposed budget includes funding for childcare, immigration, public safety, lowering auto insurance rates, energy rebates, modernizing building permits, online privacy and safety measures, and more.  “I’m not going to mince the words — the negotiations were not easy,” the governor said. “There were very substantive disagreements, tough choices and powerful special interests trying to influence the outcome. And the dysfunction out of Washington certainly doesn’t help, whether they’re starting unnecessary wars, escalating costs, especially at the pump, destabilizing the economy with illegal tariffs or denying climate science and therefore cutting out resources to encourage the clean energy future we had envisioned.” Click the link in our bio for full story.
