Thursday on May 14! At 8pm! DW welcomes highly regarded trombonist Jeb Bishop @bishopjeb , coming down from Chicago.
Bishop will play two sets. The first, crossing paths with storied jazz poet K Curtis Lyle, sure to be a treat, and a quartet with bassist Damon Smith @newmusicbass , pianist Aaron Smith (no relation), and trombonist Jeremy Melsha @ufovsusa .
Also, a fascinating trio featuring Kevin Harris @afterlife_laboratories on synthesizer, Madi Powers @m.aaadi on horn (French horn) and Steve Whetstone on daxophone (not a typo- a rare instrument, a kind of piece of wood that one bows to create a totally unique sound.)
$20/pwyc
Tonight! Saturday February 14th 7:30pm at 2223 Fish located at 2223 E. Dauphin St (near the York/Dauphin MFL/L1 station) Valentine's/hallmark weekend continues with JeJaWeDa (Jeb Bishop / Jaap Blonk / Weasel Walter & Damon Smith), Sandy Ewen & 52nd Street Planetary Ensemble!
JeJaWeDa:features the great Dutch sound poet and improvisor Jaap Blonk, trombone virtuoso Jeb Bishop, and the versatile and powerful "rhythm section" of Damon Smith and Weasel Walter. The sonic result of this alchemical gamble is a wide-open, unruly field of play where anything can and will happen. The New York City session and performance documented on these releases run the gamut from delicate chamber textures to Xenakis-meets-cracked-video-game burbling to all-out electronic meltdowns.
An experimental guitarist, artist and architect based in Brooklyn NY, Sandy Ewen's guitar playing is centered around found objects and extended techniques. She performs solo and in many diverse musical and multi-media collaborations. Ongoing projects include a duo with Damon Smith, an all-female large ensemble, the trio Etched in the Eye, and a duo with Tom Carter called Spiderwebs.
The 52nd Street Planetary Ensemble is a rotating cast of musical characters united by their dedication to the joyful practice of collective improvisation. Grounded in weekly workshop sessions they channel influences from jazz, experimental, and world music traditions into a never-ending exploration of creative freedom.

Performing Saturday, February 14th 7:30PM at 2223 Fish located at 2223 E. Dauphin Street (near the York/Dauphin MFL/L1 station) JeJaWeDa!
The band features the great Dutch sound poet and improvisor Jaap Blonk (first Philly gig in 3 years), trombone virtuoso Jeb Bishop, and the versatile and powerful "rhythm section" of Damon Smith and Weasel Walter.
Jaap Blonk is unique for his powerful stage presence and playful freedom in improvisation, combined with a keen grasp of structure.
The frenetically prolific bandleader/composer/multi instrumentalist Weasel Walter summons myriad timbres from a(mostly) conventional drum kit, while also bringing a strong performative element to the proceedings.
Jeb Bishop is an extraordinary improviser, composer, and simply one of the finest living trombonists, and has been a major voice in improvised music for more than 20 years.
Tireless organizer and Balance Point Acoustics label head Damon Smith expands both the sound world of the double bass and the roles it can play in an ensemble.
