Still a few spots left on my weekend devising intensive at @theatre503 !
For me writing and directing have always been intertwined, and sitting at a laptop typing out a script is only a small part of the making of a show.
I was so pleased to be asked to run this for a new writing theatre, as so often in the UK the word ādevisingā sets off alarm bells for buildings as inherently risky, incoherent, or overly abstract, and totally separate from the serious literary business of real plays.
In fact I think some of the best written and most powerful plays have come out of processes that involve some degree of collaborative and practical āmakingā, with the text developing throughout the process.
Weāre not going to be acting like a shoal of fish or lifting each other (I could try but I would probably drop you). We ARE going to be exploring strategies for making new work through games, exercises, improvisation and even, yes, putting pen to paper.
For people who think of themselves as writers, directors, performers, or none of the above.
(Sadly I donāt have a monochrome picture of myself waving my hands around in a rehearsal room so instead please enjoy this picture of me in tech @royalcourttheatre with the emotional support Boss Lady mug)
āEven the most well-meaningly clueless people no longer ask us whether After the Act is about how far weāve comeā
As After the Act, @breach_theatre ās verbatim musical about Section 28, opens at the @royalcourttheatre , one of its creators Billy Barrett reflects on how, even three years on from when they started working on the show, weāre already in a different era for LGBTQ+ rights
Many thanks to @billyjackbarrett for his words.
