Do you need expensive vintage gear, £1000 microphones and high end preamps to get a good sounding vintage drum sound? Absolutely not!
While I'm away onboard a ship I only have access to a £30 Behringer Interface, and a single SM57.
Inspired by @glitterpartyyy , I thought I'd see how close i can get to my regular studio motown sound, using my venue house kit and only plugins. No tape, analogue outboard, fancy preamps or studio tricks.
This is mainly about good mic positioning and even playing, after a few tries I settled on the "Daptone" position, removing the rack tom to stop excess ring and putting the mic inbetween the snare and hats about 1ft away. As you can hear from the dry track its surprising how full it sounds on its own! Overdubbed the claps, tambourine and rim clicks through the same mic & interface.
Its then mixed through various analogue style plugins for saturation, compression and tonal eq. Plus the UA plate reverb for that 'wall of sound' touch.
This wont work for every style, but in the 60s they only used 1 or 2 mics for the drum sounds we know and love, if you are hoping to get a full rock sound from this set up it would take a lot more work...
So, do you need a studio full of expensive vintage gear to get these kinds of sounds? No!
Will it stop me from spending all my money on it? No... Analogue/vintage gear is fun to use and nice to have, but dont let not having 'the right gear' stop you from making music!
