During the Victorian Era, no mantelpiece was complete without a pair of Staffordshire dogs. Staffordshire figures — a type of porcelain figurine produced predominantly in Staffordshire, England — emerged in the 1700s and rose to popularity during the Victorian Era. Often displayed on mantles and shelves, the statues were modeled after a variety of subjects, including royalty and religious figures. But dogs became a particularly popular subject in the 1840s, thanks to Queen Victoria’s beloved Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Dash. While Spaniels were the most popular breed of Staffordshire dog statue, the decorative art form also took shape as Greyhounds, Dalmatians, and Pugs. Today, authentic Staffordshire figures fetch thousands of dollars. But in the 1800s, they were produced as more accessible, mass market alternatives to finer porcelain made in other parts of Europe. Now, they’ve transformed into a certain IFYKYK must-have for a younger generation. Images: Architectural Digest/Chairish/1st Dibs

“So I accidentally moved to Cairo,” Ben Jenkins proclaims in the now-viral TikTok that started it all. In January, the New York-based comedian took what was supposed to be a short trip to Egypt with his new puppy, Croissant. But the jaunt turned into a months-long stay when he found out that the USDA bars dogs under six months old from entering the U.S. from certain countries. At the time, Croissant was just three months old. “I was looking for a grief puppy after losing my brother in October of last year,” @benjenkinsta says. After coming across Croissant, a Pug, it seemed the stars had aligned. Croissant’s original name was Teddy — which also happened to be Ben’s brother’s nickname. His breeder was also based in Wilmington, North Carolina, where Ben had taken his last trip with his brother before he passed. “From the second we met, Croissant has been nothing but personality and humor,” Ben says. “I have been mystified by his naturally comedic ways. He is akin to Dave Chappelle, Larry David, or Kristen Wiig at finding the right body language and gesture to maximize the humour of existence.” Head to the link in bio to read Ben and Croissant’s full Q&A and sign up to get the next edition of Off-Leash straight to your inbox. Poodles might seem like a “frou-frou” breed, but their distinct look was born out of practicality rather than style. Originally bred as water retrievers in 17th-century Europe, Poodles’ shaved legs helped them move freely in the water, while fluffy “pom-poms” around the chest and hips helped protect their organs and joints. Since then, Poodle cuts have evolved with the times. During the reign of Louis XVI, French nobility trimmed their Poodles to match their own elaborate hairdos. In America, long “cuffs” around the rear legs were introduced in the 1940s, when electric tools like dryers helped catapult the art of grooming forward. Poodles continued to grow their hair out into the ‘50s and ‘60s — many began sporting longer coats all over their body, albeit with shorter topknots and “sprays.” Today, Poodle owners often find a middle ground between style and maintenance. Popular cuts include the Teddy Bear (a uniformly fluffy coat) and the Miami Cut (a short-clipped body with “bracelets” at the bottom of the legs).
