Reframing the threshold. Subterranean extension of the cloister system within the Sant’Eustorgio complex, Milan. A series on my Diploma project. I remember how, last year around this time, I was trying to identify those parts of myself I feel truly attached to. I was observing how I interact with the spaces I encounter and which spaces make me feel free, that allow my mind to clear, that offer mental clarity. I believe architecture is shaped by everything that influences you, directly or indirectly: the information you expose yourself to and the experiences you have in relation to others and to space. When you live for a period of time in a place or come to interact more directly with a space, you take a part of it with you and carry it forward. Perhaps we should spend more time observing things and asking ourselves: why was it built this way? For whom? For how long?

Reframing the threshold. Subterranean extension of the cloister system within the Sant’Eustorgio complex, Milan. A series on my Diploma project. Atmospheric perspectives and some sketches; ground floor plan and basement floor plan; section and axonometric details of the detailed area; ceiling detailed section; volumetric concept; site plan The intervention is articulated through two primary spatial components. The pavilion and the art gallery are conceived as twin buildings, sharing the same proportions and formal logic, positioned above and below ground as complementary volumes. The project proposes the continuation of the monastic structure through an underground contemporary art gallery embedded beneath the second cloister. The intervention maintains the proportions and spatial logic of the existing ensemble while introducing a new layer below ground. A portico defines the transition between park and cloister, resolving the rupture of the cloister and re-establishing spatial continuity. The pavilion is integrated into the park through the slope, acting as a permeable interface between public space and the monastic precinct. The central courtyard remains open and becomes an entry sequence. Below it, a hypogeal courtyard forms the core of the gallery, establishing a controlled interior connected to the exterior through a sunken void.
