We did it! The return of TEDx Sarasota (after ten years) was exciting, dynamic, and entertaining. I was thrilled to open the evening with a talk entitled “Why we should all run away with the circus,” and I’m glad to have joined and become friends with all these wonderful speakers.
Today is the big day! Jumping Through Hoops is officially out in the world. This book is a love letter to the women of the historic circus and you can get it from @feministpress or your favorite bookshop.

I have adored #goodomens since first reading the book in the early 90s. I am also a magic history nerd. So my favorite among many loving Easter eggs in the @goodomensprime finale was, over Derek’s shoulder in the bookshop, a copy of one of Aziraphale’s favorites: Prof Hoffman’s 1885 edition of Modern Magic (seen here at the fab golden age magic exhibit currently at @nypl_lpa ).
The magic survives. 🪄

Great reading from #jumpingthroughhoops at the first @sonderreadingseries tonight, alongside a group of great poets and writers. Thanks @melaniefaranello for organizing! 🎪
World Circus Day in Sarasota was a blast. I was honored to give the Viewpoint lecture at @theringling on gender and circus, to sign books, and to introduce the evening screening of @greatestshowman . @wonderfilled_curator was the best host. The student performers of @circusartssrq are unbelievable. I left inspired and glad for a chance to wear my best red nose and stripey pants. May all your days be #circus days. 🎪❤️
Loved seeing @tracybonham with a string quartet at @thekate_ct . Unbelievable musicians (who else can mash up Holst and riot grrl?) and I especially appreciated the request to join and scream out our feelings for “Mother Mother.” Bonus last slide: last time I saw Tracy, in a random London bar on Grays Inn Road in 2004. Good thing none of us have aged since then.
I’m so happy to be nominated for a @newenglandemmy award as writer / host of Showman’s Shorts in its last year (related: funding cuts to the arts are stupid). Kudos to @williamsarris , @rpcreativect , and @barnummuseum for being the team that brought this wonderful series to life.
Introducing the first readers at Sonder's kickoff on Friday, April 24th at 6pm. Come gather in creative community and listen to these amazing writers share their words! Fiction, non-fiction, and poetry! From Betsy Golden Kellem @bgkellem Omar Acevedo @bomaracev Nadia Sims @tru_simszyyy Laugh Sanchez @therooftoppoets Benjamin Woodard @woodardwriter Spread the word and bring your friends! (Sonder: def: the sudden and profound realization that every stranger has a life as vivid and complex as your own). Stories, essays, poetry...invites you into someone else's experience, another way of seeing, hearing, feeling, being. Come listen.
The weekend (extended) hasn’t fully sunk in yet, but I’m so glad for the chance to bring some circus to @tedx_official TEDx Sarasota. Thanks to the devoted organizers, fellow speakers, and the sold-out house that came together for a great event. Preparing and giving a TEDx talk is a challenging process and one I’m grateful for.
It was also a treat to get inspired beforehand at @theringling . And of course I celebrated with a @waltdisneyworld day after. Don’t be silly.
❤️🎪📣
I hope you’ll join me and these other wonderful speakers March 16 for TEDx Sarasota’s return to the stage. If you can’t make it in person, it’ll make its way to TED channels later this year (stay tuned). I’ll be talking about why we should all get some circus in our lives.
