"Bennett Bailey's paintings emerge as relics of lived transformation: as a Black, queer, trans artist, his work is not a narration of identity, but a physical and ritualistic excavation of it.
Histories of displacement, misrecognition, and resilience have shaped him and embedded themselves into hand driven and gesturally layered work. Each piece uses the body as a site of memory and ongoing emergence, allowing emotional debris to summon stories and perspectives as atmospheric pressure"

. I wanted to make a self portrait that was in the process of constructing itself or falling apart. You can put on whatever mask you prefer, but internally, to flesh and bone, there's a creation and destruction to the self that's always happening. Whether you're growing or refusing to change. And then this freaky thing happens!
I love impasto and will now expose you to the make decadent little (big) areas this work has of it. It's so heavy, and I love feeling that when I move it
