Did you know that many women and girls adjust or even postpone their travels because of the fear, discomfort, stigma, and lack of support they face while managing their periods in public spaces? Imagine travelling long distance from Yola to Abuja while dealing with menstrual pain, limited access to sanitary materials, and the shame society still attaches to menstruation.
That is why, Big Family 360 Foundation, through the Sang Pour Sang (SPS) Project, joined hands with partner organizations and stakeholders to carry out a Menstrual Health and Dignity Sensitization Outreach across Adamawa Sunshine Park, Jambutu Park, and NURTW Park Nasarawo in Yola North LGA, Adamawa State.
The outreach created safe spaces for conversations around menstrual hygiene, dignity, access to sanitary products, and the need for more supportive environments for women and girls in public spaces like motor parks. Transport workers, market women, female commuters, youth, and community members were engaged on the importance of breaking menstrual stigma and promoting menstrual dignity for all.
Through interactive sessions, myths and misconceptions surrounding menstruation were addressed, while men and boys were encouraged to become allies in creating safer and more supportive communities for women and girls.
This impactful outreach was carried out in collaboration with Rise To Inspire Africa Initiative (RIA), Every Girl Initiative (EGI), Debbie Kauna Foundation (DKF), Today For Tomorrow Initiative (TFT), (HARAF), and National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW).
Together, we are normalizing conversations around menstruation and building communities where no woman or girl has to suffer shame for a natural process.
