welcome to the first episode of my T1D talks with me series where we talk about the stigmas and stereotypes about living with diabetes (especially as a Filipina) while living life to the fullest!
This also helps me learn as I go while also learning from the amazing and supportive diabetic community 💙🦋
learning that my dad was also a type 1 diabetic while battling kidney cancer was eye opening for me and I can only imagine what my journey would’ve been like if he were still alive.
I’m sure I’d be asking him for so much guidance. One thing is for sure, my dad was such a fighter with a heart of gold. He always had a smile on his face no matter what.
🌱 if you’re new here, hi! Welcome to the barkada (friend group in Filipino) 🌸 my name is Clarisse and I’m a Filipino-American from Queens, NYC sharing food, culture, cozy routines, and life as a type 1 diabetic while documenting how I see the world.
follow along the journey so we can learn together 🫶🫶🫶

I was nervous, emotional, and honestly a little scared.
When I first found out I had diabetes on Christmas Eve, I felt everything from fear, shame, confusion, and then some.
At first, I was told it might be type 2. But after asking for more specific bloodwork, I found out I actually have LADA, a slow-progressing autoimmune type 1 diabetes that shows up in adults.
Basically, my body is attacking the cells in my pancreas that make insulin, so eventually I’ll need insulin support. And yes… adults really can get type 1 diabetes, not just kids - who knew?!
There’s still so much misunderstanding around type 1, type 2, and LADA, especially because they can sound similar to people who haven’t had to learn the differences. And as a Filipina, I’ve noticed there can be a lot of jokes about diabetes and food, but not as much awareness that type 1 is autoimmune and can absolutely happen in adulthood too.
theres sooooo much info out there but im glad I FINALLY got my dexcom on - it didn’t hurt at all!
I’m sharing this because if you’re newly diagnosed, know someone who is, or are trying to make sense of a diagnosis that didn’t quite fit at first, I want you to know you’re not alone.
We can figure it out together ❤️
