Plastic pollution is a global and escalating threat affecting birds across oceans, coasts, and inland ecosystems. 90% of seabirds have ingested plastic and even small amounts can be deadline. In fact, as few as 11 microplastic particles can give a seabird a 50% chance of death. Get the facts. /fact-sheets/plastic-and-birds

Beyond Plastics Press Conference: 🗽🙅🏽‍♀️=🗑️ NY is NOT Disposable New York City Sanitation Commissioner Gregory Anderson and advocates hold a news conference at Pier 17 at the South Street Seaport, along the East River where barges haul away city trash. The group urges the New York state legislature to pass the Packaging Reduction and Recycling Infrastructure Act (#PRRIA - S1464A Harckham/A1749A Glick). Since the closure of the Fresh Kills landfill in Staten Island in 2001, city taxpayers have spent billions of dollars exporting waste outside the city. Last year, taxpayers spent approximately half a BILLION dollars trucking New York City waste to #landfills in the Finger Lakes; a trash incinerator in an #environmentaljustice community in Newark, New Jersey; and to other states. 30% of this waste is single-use packaging. But by reducing the amount of waste and requiring large companies — rather than taxpayers — to be financially responsible for waste disposal, this one bill will save New York City taxpayers $380 million every year. We had some heavy hitters speak at our press conference today: Judith Enck (Founder of Beyond Plastics, former EPA Regional Administrator, and my dear friend), Gregory Anderson (DSNY Commissioner), Harvey Epstein (City Council Member and former Assembly Member that fought hard for PRRIA), Assembly Member Grace Lee, State Senator Brian Kavanaugh, NYC Council Sanitation Chair Justin Sanchez, NAACP NYS ED Chris Alexander, and NRDC NYC Senior Attorney Eric Goldstein. 💪🏽💪🏽💪🏽💪🏽💪🏽 What a day. What a way to spend time and meet with friend, new and old, young and wise!! ITS GO TIME!!! LETS DO THIS ⚡️⚡️

We're in the final stretch to get The Packaging Reduction & Recycling Infrastructure Act passed this legislative session, made all the more urgent amidst Governor Hochul's likely backtracking on New York's climate policy. As reported in The Buffalo News, “The latest push for the bill, Enck noted, comes as Hochul and state leaders are close to passing a state budget that is expected to move back target dates to lower climate change-impacting emissions required under the 2019 Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act. ‘It is imperative that this bill come up for a vote, allowing the state to restore some of the damage that is being considered in the state budget,’ Enck said in a statement.” Please call Assembly Speaker @cheastie (518-455-3791) to ask that he schedule a vote on The Packaging Reduction & Recycling Infrastructure Act (A1749-a) ASAP!

If "The Plastic Detox" left you wondering how to decrease your own exposure to the toxic chemicals in plastics, you may be wondering what to avoid and how long it takes before it makes a difference. A new study shines some light on the question. /ask-a-scientist/avoid-plastic-toxic-chemicals
