hereās what I learned in my old age: community doesnāt care how much you know until it knows much you care.
invest in things you care about. it pays dividends!
this isnāt the first time Pierce @piercefreelon and I talked science fiction ā some of his biggest influences and inspirations come from Afrofuturism and classic sci-fi.
as Pierce pointed out during art beat, you donāt have to actually look too far to see those science fiction worlds in our own lives. weāve got access to so many tools and resources that can be used to connect, to create, and to make some real change in the world.
if anyone wants to learn how ArtistYear is using some of those tools ā lmk! happy to chat.
you can hear more from Pierce here or over on @artistyear .

letās talk about balance āļø
we welcomed @piercefreelon back to the Art Beat stage, and this guy found a way to bring some timely wisdom and energy!
when it comes to juggling everything he has on the stove, Pierce says managing 3 projects at once is his magic number, and that that number can look different on everyone.
you canāt pick something up if your hands are already full, and Pierce shares that without a balance to your workload (artistic, professional, platonic or intimate), you canāt give everything the attention it deserves to thrive.
learning to balance, and setting boundaries to nurture that balance, comes with practice.
follow for more highlights and snippets of advice from Pierce!
whatās your magic number for balance?

wholesome moments shared with students >>>
during our Art Beat, Symone @symonesalibstudio shared how she almost always grounds her work as an educator in public installations of portraits created by her students. these portraits include images of loved ones, community members, and the students themselves.
as Symone shared, thereās something powerful about seeing the faces of the community, created by students, in their communal space!

swipe for a throwback šø
back in August 2019, I joined a group of talented Black artists to lead a program called B.O.S.S. (Boys Overcoming Stigma & Shame). for two years, three other Black men and I guided art-based lessons for Black boys, ages 8 to 18, who survived sexual trauma.
through this, I met some incredible people who are still in my life (love to @ponnelldowell and @therationalmuslim ). This is also where I met @lostcauze , aka Reef. together, we ran music-based sessions, and his dedication to the kids was always real.
Reef pours into the community yo. he one of them ones, deserving all his flowers for his work with @beyond_the_bars and beyond šŖš¾ proud to know you bro!
last Tuesday I attended the Greater Philadelphia Cultural Allianceās (@philaculture ) annual meeting and art party with some of @ArtistYear ās Philly team!
it was great to see how the GPCA is supporting the arts throughout the city, and to recognize some local innovators for their contributions to Phillyās creative scene.
hereās a question I had after leaving there: how can I make sure that all of the talented artists I know are connected to these resources? what are the barriers in place stopping folks from being able to show up and take advantage of what the GPCA discussed?
a lot of potential answers there, but if you have thoughts, comment or DM me!
