What if the deepest shift is not from “the medicine”… but in becoming more available to what’s already trying to emerge? Medicine is only a piece of the journey. The deeper revelation of the medicine is not the experience itself… but the recognition that consciousness is far more vast, open, and unbound than you were conditioned to believe. A kind of deconditioning begins. Awareness loosens from identification. The nervous system learns that reality is larger, safer, more alive, and more interconnected than the structures of contraction once perceived. With all the recent attention on Trump’s executive order around psychedelic research, and more funding and support going toward medicines like ibogaine, psilocyb*n, an I want to offer a little nuance here. Yes, I’m happy more people are waking up to the healing potential of these medicines. And at the same time, my prayer is that this is approached with real care, deep respect, and reverence. Iboga and sacred plants are not just compounds or molecules or alkaloids (Ibogaine) here to fix you and give to you without you giving back to them. These are medicines rooted in tradition, ceremony, prayer, song, and *relationship*. I appreciated that the recent Practitioner Statement signed by over 50 of the world’s top researchers and practitioners of this medicine made clear that ibogaine is not some standalone miracle or “reset.” It does not always “cure” everyone for everything… there is no Amazon Prime of medicines. (You can read the practitioner statement on Trump’s Executive Order in the blog post about Iboga & Ibogaine, link above ⬆️) What shapes long-term healing is not just the medicine itself, but the depth of preparation, the relational context, and a commitment to consistent integration afterwards. Here I shared a little about how I came to the spirit of Iboga before ever touching the medicine itself… And why, after finally sitting with Iboga flood doses after 14 years of contemplation, I feel even more strongly that this is *not* something to rush into lightly. I’m not against research or moving this order forward. Humans clearly need help and healing!! 🐒In honor of HANUMAN JAYANTI The Hanuman Chalisa came into my life back in 2019. The story goes like this… @from.breath.2.death and I are heading back upstate from a sound-related work trip to NYC . We’re on our way to the West Side Highway, when Meg says something about a Hanuman Chalisa @krishnadasmusic gathering happening in the city. In that moment, we roll past the venue. “Should we go?” A parking spot magically appears - a crystal clear sign from the universe. Let’s check it out, we agree. And there we are moments later, sitting in a huge church, listening to hundreds chant the 40 verses. When @shyamachapin shares her Banaras version, a gorgeous haunting melody, I’m totally hypnotized. I start chanting along, the words flowing through me as if I’ve sung them many times before. After this chance encounter, I start chanting the Chalisa daily to Shyama’s melody with my shruti box. Soon, my partner @daveford joins in, and it becomes a regular practice to chant it 4 or 8 or even 12 times together in a sitting, taking turns playing the shruti box while the other plays the drum. It becomes our way back to each other when we are at odds, a way into presence. A practice of devotion. Recently, I learned that my good friend @bethaweinstein also has a connection to the Chalisa, and I shared the version from Shyama that first got me hooked. Here’s a little snippet she captured in the Sound Sanctuary a few weeks ago, of us chanting together. (That’s her voice off camera.) As you can see from the way I’m bopping around, chanting the Chalisa brings me a lot of joy. I’m itching to get some folks together this week to chant it together in the resonant Sound Sanctuary.
