A beautiful Saxon font cover made by furniture maker Victoria Walpole for the Church of St Peter and St Paul in Coleshill, Birmingham was awarded a Bespoke Guild Mark in 2024. Victoria, a Northumberland artist who paints pictures with a scalpel and wood veneers, was commissioned in 2015 to make and install a new cover ‘Living Water’ for the church’s 12th-century font carved in Caen stone. Living Water takes the form of a shallow bowl with fenestrations which reveal the inside of the font. The cover includes fish swimming by a waterfall in the baptismal stream, hand-carved leaves at the side of the stream or floating with the current, and pebbles. All the hardwoods included in the font were sustainably salvaged from scrap. Commenting on the award, Victoria said: “I am delighted to have received a Bespoke Guild Mark. Becoming a Bespoke Guild Mark holder is especially meaningful to me as it has lifted my spirits at a time when I was feeling most disheartened in my career. Since lockdown, and the closure of the gallery, I have supported my wonderful daughter and myself by working as a handywoman. The Bespoke Guild Mark has renewed my confidence in returning to the work I love and has reignited my dream of a cathedral-scale commission. Very many thanks to the @furnituremakerscompany ". @daniel_hopwood , Bespoke Guild Mark chairman, said: “The church font, Living Water by Victoria Walpole would enchant any christening with its detailed interpretation of running water in its natural form.” Click the link in our bio to read the full article. #bespokefurniture #furnituredesign #furnitureindustry

@guildanderson 's exceptional kitchen design at Trewithen, a Grade I listed family home was awarded a Bespoke Guild Mark in 2025. Trewithen was being updated for the next generation, requiring a kitchen that balanced the practical needs of modern family life with the architectural integrity of the house. Inspiration for the design was drawn in part from nearby Lanhydrock House, renowned for its Victorian back-of-house interiors. At the centre of the kitchen sits a gloss-painted oak cook’s table, designed by Guild Anderson to conceal modern appliances within its generous drawers. With space in the principal kitchen being limited, the team worked closely with the project architect to repurpose an adjacent lobby space, discreetly housing bulkier appliances. As with many of Guild Anderson’s historic house projects, the careful and sympathetic integration of modern appliances was key to maintaining the period character of the space. The lobby was transformed into a fully panelled room, allowing large American-style refrigerators and freezers to be hidden within the design. The result is a beautifully understated yet highly functional pantry and food storage area, ensuring the kitchen remains both practical and in keeping with the historic fabric of Trewithen. Guild Anderson is a team of 33 designers and makers based in South Wiltshire, specialising in creating high-performance back-of-house spaces for historic country houses and estates. By taking a meticulous brief from each client, the team ensures that every design balances practicality with period character, creating spaces that feel as if they have always belonged and are built to last for generations to come. #BespokeGuildMark #BritishCraftsmanship #HistoricHomes #BespokeDesign

The Flooded Fens Console Table and the Marshlands Drinks Cabinet by @elliottbutterwickdesign were the 491st and 492nd pieces to be awarded a Bespoke Guild Mark in the prize’s eminent history in 2023. The Marshlands Drinks Cabinet was also awarded the prestigious Christopher Claxton Stevens Prize in 2024. Commenting on receiving the award, Elliott said: “It is truly an honour to receive the Christopher Claxton Stevens Prize, one of the highest accolades in British furniture. The journey to completing the cabinet was full of challenges, and lots of mistakes were made along the way. This award has given me the inspiration to push boundaries even further in future cabinet making.” @daniel_hopwood , Bespoke Guild Mark chairman, said: “The Marshlands Drinks Cabinet is an elegant design that marries excellent craftsmanship with a great choice of contrasting woods, notably bog oak which Elliott was not afraid to use despite its potential shortcomings. He did so extremely effectively, and the outcome was an exceptional piece of bespoke furniture.” The Christopher Claxton Stevens Prize is awarded annually to the most outstanding design that has won a Bespoke Guild Mark in the past 12 months. In addition to a certificate, the award includes a cash prize of £1,000, sponsored by Christopher Claxton Stevens, Past Master of the @furnituremakerscompany . The Log Stack Cabinet by Charles Byron (@byronandgomez ) highlights the often overlooked beauty of end-grain. Drawing inspiration from a traditional Chinese medicine cabinet it creates the illusion of a simple log stack by carefully arranged veneer interspersed by white resin fractures.
