Alright, story time. My journey with salsa starts a few years ago through my record buying expeditions. I had really been getting into latin jazz, the syncopated rhythms and use of percussion were really scratching that itch I had for new some new sounds to obsess over. I started seeing RAY BARRETTO credited on a lot of records I was listening to in the jazz-funk sphere so I decided to see if he had any solo records. Saw that he put out a lot of stuff on FANIA RECORDS which I had heard of but never delved into (that would soon change). I immediately fell in love with his music because it still had those jazz roots but was wholly different and exciting for my ears. Then I was like “I guess I like salsa now so let’s do some learning.”
Over the next couple of years I would continue my education and fall in love with the genre. FANIA RECORDS would quickly become one of my favorite record labels of all time. Pretty much on the level of CTI for me where its like I see Fania, I buy Fania, no questions asked. The quality of every release is awe-inspiring. Its hard to believe a label could produce so many incredible records.
From there I’ve been been branching out and discovering so many incredible releases, often buying records just on the strength and being pleasantly surprised over and over again. So when I began this series with Bespoke at the beginning of this year, I knew eventually I would want to do a salsa night and share some of what I’ve discovered. Its been such a fun journey and I’ve connected with some amazing people along the way. The good folks at @wilmington.latindance have been so gracious and welcoming and I love what they do for our Wilmington community. If you haven’t been to one of their socials, make sure you check them out!! Amazing energy and the nicest people in town. Can’t wait to meet more of yall and share the love for this wonderful genre of music.
