Cooking outdoors on a rocket stove blends adventure, sustainability, and simplicity into one satisfying experience.
Thereās something deeply satisfying about cooking with wood fireāno switches, no knobs, gas or electricity, just fuel and flame. A rocket stove channels that primal energy in a clean, efficient way, making you feel connected to the elements.
Whether in your backyard, at a campsite, or on a cabin porch, the fresh air, birdsong, and open sky elevate even the simplest meal into something memorable.
Tending the fire, adjusting the fuel, and seeing flames respondāitās hands-on and meditative. Itās not just cooking; itās a small dance with nature.
Bernie only requires small amounts of wood and burns with astonishing efficiency thanks to the insulated combustion chamber and large air intake. You can cook a full meal with just twigs, sticks, scrap wood, anything untreated.
The very low smoke output due to clean combustion means less smoke and fewer harmful emissions, making it healthier and more comfortable for both the cook and the environment.
By using renewable biomass (sticks, pinecones, dried leaves), you reduce dependence on fossil fuels and minimize your carbon footprint.
Rocket stoves work without electricity or fuel canisters, making them perfect for off-grid living, emergency prep, or blackouts.
You can boil, fry, grill, or even bake (with some setups). From morning coffee to a sizzling stir-fry, it handles it all.
Bernie: The journey.
Every Bernie is individually hand made, by me, here in Melksham, Wiltshire. Reel shows me making number 25 of a 50 batch run.
This one is burnt bronze

What a day!
Hot sun, blue skies and an incredible group of hard working people all taking some time out to chat, chill and unwind in the Welsh countryside.
I was stoked to be invited over to @dirtyhealthofficial retreat to cook a chilli and get involved with a road test of the new retreat facility built by @the_coal_bunker@armstrong_health
Itās a beautiful location and I had wicked setup for getting my cook on under the sun. Smoky tempeh chilli followed by my fireside brownie Iād made at home.
As usual I got so carried away/immersed I only managed to snap a few pics but absolutely loved the day and the vibes this crew brings.
Thanks for looking.

Sunday skate lunch with the boy.
I was stoked Dex was keen for some cooking outdoors with me, I always think itās fun but itās different for teenagersā¦!
We tried out Wroughton pump track before cooking which I loved but it was a sketchy ride on the surf skate, if youāre into BMX though, this is sikkkk!
Kept it simple for lunch with a salt n pepper tofu, all prepped at home and ready to rock. I filmed and stoked Bernie while Dex was cheffing.
We went with the @field.blends seasoning this time and it did not disappoint, working really well with the peppers, onions and lime juice. We made some wicked wraps and it was super quick too.
If youāre looking to descreen your teen then I can highly recommend some outdoor cooking.
Thanks for looking.

My copy of @dayhike_uk magazine arriving could not have been better timed! It coincided with a few days of perfect, blue sky spring weather, glorious (and much needed) sunshine and Iād just got a new hammock for my Birthday that I was itching to try out. It was so good to make an event out of sitting/lying down to read proper print on real paper in the great outdoors.
I need no excuse whatsoever to have a hot chocolate and @harthchocolate have nailed it with the ginger version.
For an hour or so I chilled in the woods, listened to the birds and the wind in the trees while absorbing this awesome, beautifully printed magazine, it really is a work of art.
I love the Bernie patina!
It tells a visual story, every mark and color change is like a mini timeline of Bernieās life lived so far.
The colors the steel takes on are totally unique, created by each individual owner every time itās used.
As patina builds it softens perfect, shiny surfaces with tiny flaws, colour change and character to make things feel more human, used and loved.
It evolves over time youāre literally watching beauty develop, the surfaces gain richness, texture and personality that was hidden when brand new.
It makes every Bernie one of a kind, no two patinas ever turn out the same, I love seeing how all the Bernieās out there are aging and changing with time and use.
Thanks for looking.

It was a treat to get out and enjoy some spring while it lasted (20-22 March) have a brew, chat n unwind a bit and have the talented @bristolanimator capture some stills. Burning some sticks and boiling the kettle is definitely an act that is more than the sum of its parts. It leaves a lasting calm that I never realised I needed, till it washes over me and everything slows down and gets a little quieter. Except for the crows in that bit of woodland, they make a racket!

Camp Wild: Elements reloaded. What a weekend!!
I see it as sign of an epic weekend if I havenāt got many picturesā¦. Not great for my socials but good for the soul.
Screen time on my phone barely broke into double digits on the Saturday and I feel good for that.
Chatting with people freshly back from the lakes and saunas and pouring hundreds (almost) of delicious coffees kept me busy and buzzing all day.
The evening saw everyone come together to eat and relax in an environment that was so peaceful and different to my norm itās hard to put into words.
Complete immersion at a campout has to be the biggest benefit of going and leaves a lasting impression.
So hereās a few pics I quickly snapped over the 3 days at Whitmoor lakes.
1 Setting up for a some @wildish.uk coffees
