Home is where the anchor drops ⚓️ Did you know our island’s legacy of sailing goes back four centuries? Here's some key facts about the island's sailing history: ⛵️After roughly 400 year the Bermuda rig, an innovative sail design on our shores, is still used in 95% of all sailing yachts today. ⛵️Black Bermudians have been foundational to Bermuda's maritime industry since the early 1600s, serving as skilled sailors, shipwrights, and pilots despite facing enslavement and systemic racism. ⛵️Between the late 1600s and mid-1700s, the Atlantic was a hotbed of pirates and privateers — and it wasn’t always easy to tell the difference between the two. Privateers were technically “legal” pirates, licensed by the Crown to loot enemy ships. ⛵️ For a true taste of sailing on the island, watch a Bermuda Fitted Dinghy race. These are 14-foot wooden boats with massive sails often over 1,000 square feet. You don't need to be a skipper to join the fun.
