Join us on Friday, May 1, from 5:30-7pm for the opening of "Palimpsest" by Meg Walters, curated by Jasmine Lee, in the Rick Faries Gallery. Meg Walters is an emerging multi-disciplinary artist from Bermuda who now lives and works in Newcastle, NSW (Mulubinba). Her exhibition titled "Palimpsest" will present a body of work shaped by a life lived between Bermuda and Australia. Through layered imagery and painterly gestures, this exhibition explores impermanence, displacement, and the evolving idea of home. Walters offers a contemporary perspective on Bermuda’s landscape, filtered through distance, memory, and dual belonging. Key Dates: Opening Reception: Friday, May 1 | 5:30 – 7pm Artist Talk: Thursday, May 7 | 5:30 - 7pm Family Workshop (2-part series): Clay Sculpture: Saturdays: May 9 and June 6 | 10am - 12:30pm On May 1, "Palimpsest" will share an opening reception with the next major exhibition in the Butterfield Gallery, "Visions of the Vernacular: Architecture in the Masterworks Collection," curated by Dr Sara Thom and Max Grainge. We hope you can join us for the special occasion of having two exhibitions open on the same evening. RSVPs can be made through the Masterworks website.

Join us on Friday, May 1, from 5:30 - 7pm for the opening of our next major exhibition, “Visions of the Vernacular: Architecture in the Masterworks Collection,” curated by Dr Sara Thom and Max Grainge. The exhibition will present selected works of art from the Permanent Collection, dating from the early nineteenth century to the present day, which illustrate the distinctive character of Bermuda houses and the Island’s broader built landscape. Complimenting the exhibition will be a participatory installation by Kimberley Fisher in the Mezzanine Gallery. This installation will be a community project space, for independent Museum visits, school and camp tours, and artist-led workshops, all encouraging reflection on how vernacular forms are not just sites, but spaces that hold memory, identity, and lived experience. The exhibition will be on display from May 1 – September 12, 2026. “Visions of the Vernacular: Architecture in the Masterworks Collection” will share an opening reception with the next Rick Faries Gallery exhibition titled “Palimpsest” by Meg Walters, curated by Jasmine Lee. We hope you can join us for the special occasion of two exhibition openings on the same evening. RSVPs can be made through the Masterworks website.

Last week, Year 9 BHS student Ellie Carreiro joined Masterworks for a work shadowing placement, spending the day behind the scenes with our education and curatorial teams. From unloading the kiln and creating ceramic test tiles to preparing materials for our current exhibition, Ellie experienced many aspects of the Museum's educational programming and gallery work. During her visit, Ellie also explored 'Visions of the Vernacular: Architecture in the Masterworks Collection' and selected Bruce Stuart’s 'Verdmont, Smith’s' (1989) as her favourite artwork in the exhibition. She reflected, 'Personally, the painting of the Verdmont building in Smiths stood out the most to me. Due to how the artist managed to incorporate the tiniest of details. One of the details I noticed is on the chimney, which is on the left side, there are little ridges. This shows the rivets in the chimney, which perfectly fade into the shade covering it. This is a very small detail, but it makes the painting feel more immersive. So the painting makes people drawn to it since it feels real. It gives the same effect as if someone took a photo with a camera. Another example is the big tree on the left, as a similar technique has been used. Giving it the effect that makes it look like it is a photo. With artworks like this that have a photographic effect, it represents dedication and determination. Since they made it as accurate as possible.' 'Visions of the Vernacular' is on view through September 12. Scroll to see photos from the gallery, along with The Veranda - an installation by Kimberley Fisher and Theo Rehbach. Serving as both a workshop and shared art-making space, The Veranda invites guests to reflect on memory, identity, and lived experience through vernacular architecture.
