On Friday, May 1, our CCA MFA thesis exhibition will open to the public. This marks the culmination of two very challenging years on a personal level and multitude of fronts. They’ve also been some of the most rewarding. I’m grateful to see this program through and excited to share this moment with my incredible cohort and Bay Area community! Hope you can make it by campus while it’s on view through May 16. Our reception will be held just ahead of closing on Friday, May 15, from 5–8PM. Please come out to celebrate the class of 2026 and CCA. The latter sadly won’t be around much longer… I owe a tremendous amount of gratitude to so many people who made this all possible, not least of which @enlargedheart , @aspenmays , and Chris Johnson. None of this CCA adventure happens without their belief in me, endless support, and advocacy. It was such a privilege to meet and work with many other brilliant professors and advisors here, which makes the end of this historic school all the more difficult. And let’s not forget @race.dillon who literally carried me over the line many times. So many more people helped me complete this MFA and accomplish the work, but it’s truly impossible to name them all. That said, I owe so much to my family and friends — specifically @anyavo for her patience, belief, and for putting up with me (especially lately). I share this all with you! 🤍

Excited to be in LA with the @bookandjobgallery crew for the inaugural edition of @show.l.a ! I’ll be showing new work in a (very) limited edition, alongside my studio-mates and artists recently featured at our space. Not to mention a few rare prints by the late, great Henry Wessel… I’ll also have a few extra options off the wall, including some images featured in Soft Eyes. On Saturday, Austin and I will be signing some remaining copies of our book via @deadbeatclub at 3PM. There’s gonna be a lot of great friends and folks in the building, so hope to see you there 🖤 Design by @megankelso

Signing copies of Soft Eyes today at LAABF with Deadbeat Club at 3PM. Don’t miss @tracylchandler and @emilyshur signing their books at 2PM and 4PM respectively. Along with all the other great Deadbeat titles available at table G4. Hope y’all can make it out to the @artcenteredu for @printedmatter_artbookfairs — independent publishers and artists need your support more than ever! Going strong through tomorrow at 5PM 🖤

SF Bay Area! The final stop in our book release “tour” will fittingly be at home. It’s a little last-minute, but we hope y’all can join us next weekend to celebrate our project in the new year. Swing by @minnesotastreetproject for a pop-up exhibition and artist talk on Saturday, January 11, from 3-7PM. Austin and I will be joined by Allie Haeusslein for a conversation beginning at 5PM. (I’m giving a talk at SFMOMA beforehand, so catching both will be possible if you already have tickets to that event) Work from Soft Eyes will be on view from Thurs, Jan 9 — Sat, Jan 11 only. @deadbeatclub will be in the house as well, and we’ll be signing copies of the book (available for purchase) just after the talk. We will surely move into a local watering hole to continue the celebration later that evening. A huge thanks to all that worked to make this possible — especially our friends at MSP, Allie, Deadbeat Club, and countless others. Hoping everyone is having a great start to ‘25 and that we see you there!!

Wow @toddhido_ ! High praise from a photographer of your caliber, but even moreso from someone who knew Hank personally 🥹 We all - together with @haus_of_allie @awstain @berlinbrrr - knew there was a lot to live up to with this project... Your words and your support of this book mean the world. Thank you for calling out Soft Eyes among your favorite books of the year.

Arriving Soon: Soft Eyes by Henry Wessel, Adrian Martinez & Austin Leong. Includes an essay by Allie Haeusslein. Signed & estate stamped copies available online now! “Soft eyes”, the late Henry Wessel once wrote in describing the way he went about looking for photographs, “is a physical sensation. You are not looking for something. You are open, receptive. At some point you are in front of something that you cannot ignore.” In this smart and tender act of homage, Wessel’s photographs (many of them previously unpublished) are combined with the work of two younger California photographers, Austin Leong and Adrian Martinez, and the resulting work is a surprising exploration of influence as well as a study of the sorts of connective tissue that provide a throughline in photography’s long and fascinating history of lineage.

Far from home, whilst in a country that has much significance in my life and journey, I’m detaching momentarily from the news cycle to celebrate a profound life achievement: My first major publication, “Soft Eyes”, will debut this week in Paris during @polycopies alongside the many people who made it possible. We will have limited copies available at the fair and will be hosting a signing alongside many other @deadbeatclub titles + artists, on Saturday, Nov 9. We are up at 6PM. I reflect on the far more dire circumstances that led my father to once seek political asylum in France and eventually led him to the place that inspired much of the work in this book. The former place I now find myself in too feels like a refuge, and the moment emblematic of life’s twists — most of which we cannot control, but must make the most of. Beyond grateful to be here for it and to the people who made this all possible (many of which are acknowledged in the book, but honestly, too many to name). That said, I will call out a few who are sharing this time abroad with us: Gratitude would not do justice as a sentiment for what I feel for you Allie. Thank you for believing in us and stewarding this project across its many forms. Thank you Clint and Alex for your desire to manifest this publication. Thanks to Chris, Andy, Nelson, Ann, and Charlie, who put so much into making this all come to life. I’m blessed to be here with my loving partner Anya, who had no small hand in this as well. And last, but certainly not least, thank you Austin and Hank. I would not be the photographer I am today, without my main collaborator and primary sources of inspiration. One of the true honors of my life is existing on these pages with you both. I cannot wait to share this book with everyone back home soon — and with all those that might stumble upon it around the world, in some bookshop or shelf, like I have done countless times before 🖤
