This 6-year-old (yes! 6!) never runs out of energy. Today's hike was epic: rainbows, guava, rock climbs, sprints to the finish, up and down the ahupua'a. Mahalo manoa! #puupia #kolowalutrail #waahilaridge #manoa #audhd

The Center for Southeast Asian Studies at UH Mānoa is thrilled that our beloved ethnomusicology faculty, Dr. Benjamin Fairfield, is having his ‘Kani Ka ‘Ōpala project exhibited at Hamilton Library! 🥁🌿 Ben’s project is largely inspired by his research as a graduate student and his time as a Peace Corps volunteer in Chiang Mai, Thailand, where he lived in a village with the Indigenous Karen (Pgaz k’Nyau) people. 🌈 Many of the pieces featured at the Bridge Gallery were crafted in Ben’s MUS311(M) Thai Ensemble class, a course initially supported by the CSEAS with funds from the National Resource Center Grant. In this sustainability-focused course, students repurpose ‘ōpala (rubbish) into Thai musical instrument. CSEAS has also supported outreach workshops for Kani ka ʻŌpala project at other venues. Please join us to congratulate Ben on his new interactive exhibition at Hamilton Library! The exhibit is available through August 10, do drop by and look (play) around to show your support! 💚 Read the full story about the 'Kani ka ʻŌpala project on UH News: https://www.hawaii.edu/news/2026/05/07/hamilton-exhibit-instruments-repurposed-from-opala/

Our swan song is the chicken song! Finishing off an incredibly impactful (and packed!) Week as an almost-honorary member of the @orquestadecateura (I've got the shirt to prove it). We ended with a squawkie-talkie workshop to send them off to their next adventure. Thank you to Favio Chavéz for bringing so much hope, joy, and love to this world. Thank you to the @east.west.center @ewc.arts for making this happen. Thank you to the @uh_music_manoa for co-sponsoring this project. Thank you to @capitolmodern for hosting the concert last night. Thanks to @megadeth for giving this project wings so many years back. And thank you to @lisameiling16 for making this week possible. When the world sends you (or calls you) garbage, send back a song. <><><><><><><><><> #mus311 #chickendance #recycledorchestra #landfillharmonic

Grateful to the @ewc.arts for making this residency with the @orquestadecateura possible this week. The space and crowd at @capitolmodern were amazing. So much love, joy, and collaborative effort went into last night's performance. I am humbled, grateful, and honored to be a part of this. Thank you all for bringing this message of potential, peace, and play to the world. Take a sad song and make it better ❤️ #mus311 #allyouneedislove #beatles #recycledorchestra #landfillharmonic

I taught music briefly at Ala Wai back during my stay at home dad days, and it was great being back today. The Recycled Orchestra was game for learning the Ala Wai school song in the van ride over, and we opened the show with this number. Mahalo all for the amazing show. Plenty more to come! #alawai #alawaielementary #musicteacher

Taking this show on the road today to the north shore! After a brief stop at the Kokua Foundation we headed out to sunset beach, where the orchestra were joined by a special guest... can you spot him? The recycled orchestra is definitely getting the Aloha. Mahalo, everyone! Not sure we can top this tomorrow, but let's see! #jackjohnson #northshore #recycledorchestra #landfillharmonic #eastwestcenter

The Landfillharmonic movie came out when I first started teaching as a graduate assistant in the ethnomusicology program at @uh_music_manoa . I never imagined I'd have the opportunity to work with them 15 years later, or to have the @orquestadecateura give a live impromptu performance at my #mus311 gallery exhibit at Hamilton library! If you need something to do this summer, check out my exhibit. If you need something this Friday, don't miss their free concert at Capitol modern! 🙏

Amazing day 1 with THE Recycled Orchestra of Cateura. We were blessed to have Mahi La Pierre offer an ʻūkēkē workshop (but really so much more) as a way for this group to connect to place via music. Looking forward to an amazing week! And join us on Friday at 5:30pm for their free public concert at @capitolmodern ! #recycledorchestra #ukeke #musica #paraguay #eastwestcenter
