We are the ones we’ve been waiting for. This year, storms rolled through our neighborhoods. Bills that could solve Hawai’i’s biggest problems died in the legislature. The cost of calling Hawai’i home keeps climbing out of reach. And the people with the most money keep making the decisions that shape all of our lives. No one is coming to save us. But we can show up for each other. Not wishing, but organizing. Not waiting, but building. Ho’ohui with us: 🗓️ May 22 🕓 4-9pm 📍 @capitolmodern FREE to attend & ‘Ohana-friendly. All are welcome. 🎶 Live Music by @thevitals808 and @thisisirielove 🗺️ Community Resource Vendors 🥁 Healing through Art Workshops 🎨 Community Mural: Add Your Mark with @solomonenos 🖼️ Open Gallery Experiences 😋 Eats & Drinks by @nuikealohahawaii ... & MORE! Optional in-person donations go toward storm relief and long-term recovery. Hui pū 🫱🏽‍🫲🏾 join the movement RSVP🔗 → our-hawaii.org/hoohui

"Containment Landscape #28, Kiholo Bay" collage by Margo Ray, 2020, gouache, layered paper, hand-cut inkjet prints on canvas. Art in Public Places Collection of the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts (SFCA). Purchased from the "Kipaipai Fellows 2020" exhibit. Currently on display in the Tuberculosis Control Program, State of Hawaiʻi Department of Health. Containment Landscape #28, Kiholo Bay is part of Hawaiʻi Island artist Margo Ray’s ongoing body of work focusing on water tanks as the central subject. Once a common sight throughout the islands, these water tanks are now remnants of a rapidly disappearing rural lifestyle. The artist explains, “Growing up and living on an island creates a sense of isolation. In my paintings and collages, I incorporate imagery of infrastructure and architecture that communicates this sense of solitude. The images of the tanks I am dealing with were primarily built in the 1920-70's and represent an older lifestyle that is very much tied to agriculture and the unique Hawaiian ranching culture of the Paniolo (Hawaiian Cowboy). This piece, Containment Landscape 28, Kiholo Bay is based on photographs I took there (Kiholo Bay) in the summer of 2020 while spending time with friends that would soon be moving away. The collage is a reconstructed landscape based on an energetic or spiritual interpretation of the place, rather than an exact depiction. Using the allegory of landscape, I explore notions of displacement, vulnerability and authenticity as well as my relationship to natural and supernatural worlds; drawing attention to the complicated triangulation of relationships between man, land, and animal and notions of freedom, invasiveness and belonging.” The State Foundation on Culture and the Arts is Hawaiʻi's state government arts agency. SFCA programs include Capitol Modern, the Hawaiʻi State Art Museum. Explore the public art collection in the SFCA's online database at sfca.hawaii.gov/app-art. Image description: Collage depicting a water tank on stilts in a landscape of blues, greens, and yellows.
