‘Floating Man/Knowledge By Presence’
Oil, distemper, wax, sand and charcoal on flax
170 x 150cm
2020-21
@andy_wicks_ came up with the idea of having blue walls for the show. I was initially sceptical, but feel it works really well. You can see the painting against a white background in the next image ▶️.
Incidentally, there is no blue in the painting, just different mixes of Ivory Black and Titanium White. The other two colours used are Cadmium Red Light and Yellow Ochre.
The title links the painting to more philosophical concepts about the existence of the soul, but I was also thinking about the feeling of being in stasis or limbo - literally floating. I used to love watching Ulysses 31 when I was a kid, but was always terrified of the characters who were kept in suspended animation in the entire series, and I kind of relate to that experience over the last year. It feels like we are at the end, middle and beginning all at the same time.
My show, ‘And Other Withered Stumps of Time’ continues today and tomorrow 12-6pm and runs until the 19th @castor_gallery
