Chable, 1998
I was an undergraduate art major at the University of Colorado, Boulder focusing on ceramics. The underground woodshop was directly across ceramics in the dark, secluded hallway. I had been building with wood since I could hold a hammer so I loved working on projects in the woodshop.
I found an old hardwood chair in the dumpster with one of it's long back legs broken in two. I was studying modern bridge design in my history of architecture class and I saw a solution in this broken chair. It was my first "highly crafted, sculptural furniture" and it won over the respect of the cantankerous old shop tec, Dell Khine. I got a lot more access and eventually worked as a shop tec there.
I flipped the seat over, moved the backrest down to hold books, and added some cable and hardware.
I have been using it as my bedside table for the past 28 years
You can see it tonight in the exhibition, "Unseated", at Durden & Ray, on the 8th floor of the Bendix building, DTLA. 7-10pm. See you there!

Yesterday I organized all the foreign change that I have collected over the years while abroad. Somehow I didn't lose these coins over the decades. Google lens helped me identify a lot of them with my reading glasses on. Here are a few from my collection.
I was reminded of the beautiful low sculptural reliefs that we carry around in our pockets or purses. Art is everywhere.

"Dark Tower" is the 3rd and final sculpture in this series that I exhibited in my 2017 show, "Reign of Fire" at LA Louver Gallery. Again, almost no one recognized what it was at first sight. But the feeling of dread always permeated. Today, as tens of millions of Americans go hungry, the military is deployed to US cities and our air traffic system begins to grind to a halt. We now all understand what the Dark Tower is.
I made this sculpture as a warning of what lay ahead, along with two other sculptures, "Mar-a-Lago" and "White House". I tried to warn us. Clearly I failed.

Hours before snap funding ran out for 40 million Americans, a Great Gaspy themed party raged on at Mar a Lago last weekend. You just can't make this stuff up. This is the second in the series from my 2017 show "Reign of Fire".
I made this sculpture as a warning of what lay ahead, along with two other sculptures, "White House" and "Dark Tower". It's a shame that he didn't tear down the east wing of this monstrosity instead of maulng the Peoples House.

I exhibited this sculpture, "White House" in my show "Reign of Fire" in 2017. Almost no one recognized what it was at first. I loved how one of the most famous buildings in the world could also appear so abstract if your perspective was altered.
I made this sculpture as a warning of what lay ahead, along with two other sculptures, "Mar-a-Lago" and "Dark Tower". I never imagined that the White House itself would become a casualty.
