Little film dump from the back half of last year. I got discouraged from posting these earlier because some of the colour rolls got messed up by the lab so it took a lot of wrestling to get them to this point, that’s what I get for being too lazy to do it myself. But now with some shows on the horizon seeing these just makes me excited to spend time with these wonderful people again!

Huge congratulations to @wyattclouis on a stunning album. I was honoured to capture some of the process (and have therefore been waiting for this record for years!!) , have been trying to post a bunch of the BTS shots but Instagram doesn’t want to let me so they’ll have to go in the story! Love you Wyatt, this record reflects the talent, warmth & love of the people who made it. #yymusic #portra400pushed2stops #yashicamat

I often get fixated on the power that physical objects hold in connecting us to the past. I think sometimes I doubt that my past ever really happened; moments instantly become memory without any tangible proof tying it to our present. This is something that satisfies me about shooting film. When I hold the physical, material negative, this feels like proof that I was indeed once standing behind that camera in this moment in time, because I am looking back through my own eyes via this tangible thing in my hands.
Very navel-gazey, I know. But that’s one of the reasons I wanted to do this project: a photo on Randi’s birthday, on consecutive years, on the same roll of film. The removable film backs of the RB67 made this possible, and so each of these consecutive images on this single roll of Acros were taken in January of 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, and 2022.
I kept this film back carefully labelled and sealed away in a ziploc bag in the fridge with some silica gel, and it followed us through 5 years of apartment moves, mental health ups and downs, through significant improvements in my photography skill and understanding of this camera, through the expiry date of this roll, through a pandemic (you can probably tell which year took a greater toll than others. Winter lockdown 2020/21 was not the most joyous time to be reflecting on one’s life through photos of aging)… some light leaks crept in over time, especially evident in the first image, but overall the roll survived to tell this story.
I originally intended it as a trial run for a longer project spanning 10 years across an entire 10 shot 6x7 roll (hence the relative lack of care taken with some of the images!) but I’m not sure if I’ll go forward with that in the end. Still, image consistency aside, it means something to be able to hold a physical way of seeing past Randi over the years through past Me’s eyes.
I don’t know if any of that makes any sense at all so in summary, one photo per year, same day each year, same roll of film. Cool right?
