Very excited to host the first Acts of Commoning event at the Field Rooms and look at a massive issue for Sydney: HOUSING. Sydney consistently ranks among the top three - least affordable cities- in the world! This is great for investors and developers, but for everyone else it’s a $!/?&!$ nightmare! Collectively is there anything we can do towards ACTUAL affordable housing…forever?
As part of @bekconroy ‘s public program for her residency at the Field Rooms, we have a couple of events with fabulous people (see below!) to start this conversation. Come along!

Predators rely on the silence, complicity, and isolation of their victims. They bet on us not connecting the dots and speaking out. But not today. Today we make this public statement. I am so fucking proud to stand beside these wonderful women to call out this abuse. #sunlightisstillthebestdisinfectant
Last night I dreamed
ten thousand grandmothers
from the twelve hundred corners of the earth
walked out into the gap
one breath deep
between the bullet and the flesh
between the bomb and the family.
They told me we cannot wait for governments.
There are no peacekeepers boarding planes.
There are no leaders who dare to say
every life is precious, so it will have to be us.
They said we will cup our hands around each heart.
We will sing the earth’s song, the song of water,
a song so beautiful that vengeance will turn to weeping,
the mourners will embrace, and grief replace
every impulse toward harm.
Ten thousand is not enough, they said,
so, we have sent this dream, like a flock of doves
into the sleep of the world. Wake up. Put on your shoes.
You who are reading this, I am bringing bandages
and a bag of scented guavas from my trees. I think
I remember the tune. Meet me at the corner.
Let’s go.

Very excited about today’s weather forecast in Sydney. I had to look up what 50% chance of 0 mm of rain meant and it turns out that it’s probably not gonna rain [yayyyyyyy!!!] which means we get to screen this amazing film tonight at Open Fields on a construction site in Waterloo [offering 0% affordable housing] but on which I was privileged to be the pilot artist in residence for this amazing project conceived and run by the fabulous artist duo Hugo and Heidi from MAPA projects. @_m_a.p_a_

The documentary that we’re screening is a “laugh so you don’t cry” kind of film. I think it’s quite hilarious and to be honest I’ve seen all the documentaries about the housing crisis and I reckon this one is definitely one of the best. Mark Humphries is very funny and even funnier when he gets a little bit cranky with housing investors [worth seeing on its own]. Well done to film maker Bill Code from Wedge-Tail Pictures and the producers for getting this film up; we are so happy to be part of your distribution circle to get more eyeballs on this urgent film.
Also a little workshop happening the following day [link in the bio] - this is for people who are interested in being part of a grassroots community group/movement to actually get some affordable housing happening in the City Of Sydney. We have assembled a cast of good-looking people who will take us through four different perspectives on housing including ‘what is a community land trust’. In the second half of the workshop we will actually get our hands dirty with planing and plotting—if that sounds like a cup of tea please let us know because places are limited.
See you tonight from 6 pm at the Waterloo site entrance is of Young Street near the corner of McEvoy st in Waterloo. The film screening will start at 7:30 pm when the sun goes down. BYO drinks and snacks. We will have an esky a powered ice box on site for your drinks. Maybe bring your own cup, if you like we will have some cups on site but best BYO all your things. See you there.

"The Australian government foregoes approximately $20 billion to over $27 billion annually in combined revenue through the 50% capital gains tax (CGT) discount and negative gearing concessions. The CGT discount alone is projected to cost the federal budget $21.9 billion to $23.7 billion in the 2024–25 or 2025-26 financial years."
The Australia Institute, Negative gearing and capital gains tax discount driving up house prices, October 1, 2024
Do you often think that the reason we can’t have affordable housing is because it’s too expensive? Or maybe it’s too complicated? [spoiler alert: it's not]
Come along to our film screening and workshop on the 21st and 22nd March [link for bookings in bio]
In the first “Acts of Commoning” event at the Field Rooms we take a look at Housing and specifically Community Land Trusts—what are they, and how can we build one in Sydney?
