Fed up with traveling, airports, rising costs and generally trashing the planet? Last year, in a drastic attempt to reduce my carbon footprint, to say ‘no’ to more work requests and to grow vegetables I didn’t fly anywhere. My article cataloguing the outcomes is now available online from the International Documentary Association. (link below). Thanks @clarelindsey for calculating the huge reduction I made in carbon usage and to @whickerawards for changing how we work to make up for my inability to attend many far-flung markets. And to @elkewenzel for meeting me off the train from Copenhagen for our first catch up in 40 years! Ironically, I’m writing this post on the first ( and hopefully only) long haul flight I’m taking this year to combine attending Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival with visiting family including my Aunty Shelagh - she adapted to WhatsApp in my absence but it’s not as good as a hug. #nofly #reducecarbon #documagazine #growmoreveg /feature/my-no-fly-year

Thank you @roopagul for the moment of joy that is eating your mango, white chocolate and passionfruit desert made from your book Indian Kitchens with Cardamon and Pistachio biscuits. I have been searching the key ingredient - sweet, juicy alphonso mango when two boxes of them arrived on my doorstep from Pakistan. They are sent annually by my friend Majid Hussein as a thank you for helping to fundraise for his liver transplant more than 32 years ago. These deserts are filled with love. A pocketful of happiness as @richard.e.grant would say. Much needed in our troubled world. 🥰😋☺️

Job brilliantly done. 👍👍👍 The team from @masterthatcherssouth @paulc1979 @scrowm have been working painstakingly on our house for three months! Turned out to be a much bigger job than expected with a lot to fix. Their professionalism, creativity and craft was astonishing. They became a tourist attraction for walkers and locals all absorbed in watching their skilful work. No corners cut, obstacles overcome, they worked as if it was their very own house and the end result is beautiful, robust and will last our lifetimes! They were such lovely guys to share so much time with too. Kind, funny and very tidy ☺️. We’ll miss them but there’s a thatched garage that’s looking tatty in comparison…. Watch this space! #thatchingheroes #thatching #sussex #craftsmanship

What comes round goes round. I have been mentoring @dhakadoclab for three years online. It’s tough making meaningful connections over timezones, language and cultural differences. Working long hours as a ‘volunteeer’ to see how you can make a difference. But you always hope seeds are sewn that will grow people and stories in new directions. It was there that I saw @shresthasubina1 in a new phase of her film @devidocumentary that was a game changing moment. It was there that I met so many talented other Nepali filmmakers. So I was really honoured when @smri.b , a former mentee, asked me to come to Nepal to work with other women filmmakers to increase their confidence in taking stories to the world. Thanks to @kathaharu and @npbritish I will be there later in November.

Not seeing much publicity for this important film released on BBC2 @bbcstoryville this evening and now in I-player. So please share and tell people about it. Told by four Palestinian families trapped and facing death as they are pushed into smaller and smaller zones that then get bombed. One, Aya, who loses her home, family members and hopes of ever taking up a place to train to be a lawyer in Italy, asks ‘why does nobody care about us’? And still we get silenced and gas-light for saying #stopthegenocide

HAIRCUT DAY for our roof. Some extreme cutting but after it was done we discovered the true ridge of our roof is several feet lower than before. The roof had been packed with loose reed that was damp and heavy. I always feel better after a haircut and our whole house is feeling better now too! Thanks @masterthatcherssouth @scrowm @paulc1979 for being so thorough and professional. #thatching #thatch #haircut #ridge #Trim #masterskills #sussex

PREPARATION is the hardest part of any job. Our team from @masterthatcherssouth found huge layers of excess reed weighing down our roof and mis-shaping the structure so they are spending a lot of time just undoing it ready to throw away. It’s far more than they bargained on. But at least we know what replaces it will last our lifetimes! #throwaway #preparation #properjob #thatching @paulc1979 @scrowm
