Designed by B.E Architecture, this property overlooking the Gold Coast’s Mermaid Beach emanates subtle strength. Crafted from board formed concrete with vertical Vulcan® Screening across windows and openings, the home balances a stark, industrial style coolness with textural warmth. Over 750 individual battens were used for the project, each skillfully hand-crafted and placed by builder Gino Pase and his team at Beech Projects. Positioned on the coast and exposed to the full force of the Gold Coast sun, materials for Hedges Residence were specified to endure harsh weather and salt‑laden air. Heat‑tempered Vulcan timber offered the resilience and stability needed for long‑term performance. A closer look inside Bombora, welcoming 2026 with the release of some of our favourite interior spaces of the home.   Photographed as one of our final projects of 2025, the interiors adopt a refined, executive palette that contrasts the robust exterior shell. Bombora presents a composed study in material endurance and architectural clarity.   Cast concrete, natural stone and copper define a restrained palette chosen for strength, longevity and the ability to patina with time. This house on Queenslands’s Mermaid Beach, was constructed using concrete as one of its main materials. As well as its structural capabilities concrete can be a beautiful in itself. The pattern on the concrete facade was created using different types of timber arranged in a complex pattern. The concrete was poured against the timber so that when removed the impression of the timber grain was left on the concrete surface. Concrete was used inside the house as part of the interior detailing. Oak and travertine were chosen to complement the concrete, the three materials used for all of the interior finishes unifying the inside aesthetic with the outside of the building. Working with concrete brings with it an association with solidity, permanence, and structure. In this Queensland house on Hedges Avenue overlooking Mermaid beach, the entire structure was created from off form concrete using smooth form work creating a perfectly surface with only the outline pattern from the layout of the sheets. The concrete when dry was then selectively chiseled by hand to create a scabbled surface contrasting with the areas left untouched. The scabbling was stopped at the buildings corners creating a fine 50mm trim that gives the facade its rigour and precision. The success of these details is very dependant on the care and focus of the contractors responsible for them and with concrete you only get one chance to get it right.
