What can softwoods unlock in architecture? From structural systems to interiors and cladding, different softwood species bring different qualities to architecture. Larch offers durability and texture, weathering naturally over time. Spruce enables lightweight, engineered systems with precision and adaptability. Douglas fir combines structural strength with warmth and refinement. Across Wood Awards projects, it’s this understanding of material that often shapes the final architectural outcome. If timber plays a central role in your project, we’d love to see your entry. Entries are open until 22 May 2026. Great to have the scaffolding down as we approach completion of the Phase 1 works at St. John the Baptist Church, Kidmore End. The Grade II listed and much loved church has undergone a programme of restoration works. This included stone cleaning, a new lighting scheme and more efficient heating system. These improvements followed a quinquennial report which highlighted several key issues, which, if left unaddressed would lead to more significant issues overtime. It will be great to see the church in full swing soon!

Many thanks to Street and Walton Men's Shed for making these fantastic swift boxes for the Baily's site. Beard Construction generously donated £500 to the project and supplied the tea and biscuits to keep them going! The boxes will provide valuable nesting opportunities for swifts, helping to counter the significant decline in numbers seen across the UK. All part of our ongoing commitment to the environment, ecology and nature. @beard.construct

For several years,Hunters has supported University of Reading undergraduate students who are studying Building Surveying, Construction Management & Quantity Surveying.   As part of their Part II ‘Projects’ module, students take on the challenge of the design and construction of a sustainable extension to a campus building, presenting their ideas to the University, as well as a consultant team including Hunters and Beard Construction.  The module combines technical work with presentation skills practice, teamwork, risk analysis and project skills.    It’s inspiring to see the student’s teamwork and technical skills.   This year, we were delighted to celebrate the winning team and rising stars at an event hosted at Beard Construction’s offices.     A huge congratulations to all the students and the winning team!   The Hunters team included David Capel, Katie Grubb and Louie Capsalis. #constructionmanagement #buildingsurveying #quantitysurveying #award
