A tribute to Ben Kelly Design. About 17 years ago I found myself in Ben Kelly’s studio on Borough Market as our paths crossed on an the design of an arts centre. Famous as the designers of the iconic Hacienda, his work is well known for its strong and colour graphic qualities. On visiting his studio located on the first floor of one the victorian buildings in borough market I did not encounter a slick interior that I was expecting, but a very casual and creative space. One of the only concession to ‘interior design’ in the studio was some buckets hanging upside down repurposed as a lampshades. So this morning, in need of a display prop for our stand at Photo London, Ben’s bucket lampshades came to mind. Buckets now repurposed as book display!

At Photo London this week we have two vintage prints by Dorothy Bohm.
The first depicts a young woman in South Africa in 1974 during the apartheid period in South Africa. The second print is from 1955 lower east side of New York, showing a family sitting on the door step. Bohm was displaced as teenager at the onset of WWII and was separated from her family for over 20 years. Her work has always demonstrated great empathy towards representing different cultures, class and circumstances. If you would like to know more about her work visit the exhibition ‘About Women’ at Farley’s House and Gallery @farleyshg
Dorothy’s daughter Monica Bohm-Duchen will be giving a talk about the exhibition

At Photo London we’re joined this afternoon by Daniel Rapley who will be signing copies of his book ‘Drift’. Drift is a series of works constructed from an archive of slides from house clearances made over a 7 year period. The work has an intriguing painterly quality, often surreal and brings into focus authorship and memory. Come and say hello to Daniel and team Beam.

In David Ainley’s paintings, lines are often scraped back to reveal previous layers, resulting in shifts in colour, texture and density. This process of revealing echoes both the nature of mining and the construction of geology. The paintings and drawings also include lines cut through the surface, which can refer to mineral deposits mapped in the landscape and veins of material found within the geology of the environment.

Launching this week: David Ainley - Hidden Extraction (From Landscape)
Thurs–Sat 9–5pm, 19 March-9 May 2026
Beam is delighted to present an exhibition of paintings by David Ainley (b.1943). The exhibition includes several paintings in acrylic, drawings in mixed-media and watercolours that reflect the artist’s sustained interest since the mid-1990s in mined and quarried places and the ‘unseen’ activity that shapes the landscape.
The artworks are constructed from systems, symbols and forms that represent the qualities of mined materials, techniques of extraction and the environments created. These highly intensive works also meditate on the immense human labour required in both ancient mining and contemporary artisanal mining practices. Many of Ainley’s works include thousands of lines incised in multiple layers of monochrome. These lines are often scraped back to reveal previous layers, resulting in shifts in colour, texture and density. This process of revealing echoes both the nature of mining and the construction of geology. Curated by Jonathan Casciani and Prof. Mark Rawlinson.

Too knackered from work to read? Check out a photo book. There’s a lot more to a photograph than a quick glance. If you’ve not come across Photo Book before they are usually a single focus by a photographer on to a single subject - an exhibition in book form. Spend time with a photo and see what it reveals. Here’s a selection with an environmental theme currently in the book shop.
