🎉 BRADFORD ARTS CENTRE IS OPEN 🎉
Bradford Arts Centre has opened to the public, celebrating South Asian culture, contemporary performance and its heritage as Kala Sangam and its founders, Dr Shripati Upadhyaya, and Dr Geetha Upadhyaya. With a state-of-the-art, highly accessible, Grade II listed, creative home and its new name chosen by the community, this marks an exciting new moment for the legacy of Bradford’s City of Culture year as we open our doors for everyone with a welcome moniker of ‘Hiya, Love’.
Joining the Board of Trustees as Chair at this historic moment is Shagufta Bibi, a marketing and communications director, born and raised in Bradford. Also joining the Board as a Trustee is Deepak Sharma, Vice-Chair of Bradford Race Equality Network.
Named by its community to represent the city, Bradford Arts Centre offers a welcoming creative home for performance, artistic development, meetings, education and community workshops spotlighting the city’s brilliant culture and heritage. The opening programme includes premieres from Jaivant Patel Company, Mobius Dance, and Natalie Davies, and four festival takeovers of the building.
Modernised meeting rooms and conference spaces have been created as commercial hire spaces that enable the centre to offer £1 tickets for performances and £1 a day studio hire for artists.

Last week, we welcomed Alfie, a Year 10 student, to Bradford Arts Centre for a five‑day work experience placement, giving him a real insight into life inside a busy creative organisation.
During his time with us, Alfie got fully involved in a range of activities, from office and administration tasks to observing front‑of‑house and community engagement work. He supported staff by inputting and organising data, gaining first‑hand experience of how strong organisation and attention to detail are essential to the day‑to‑day running of an arts centre.
A key focus of Alfie’s placement was building confidence and employability skills. With structured reflection and staff guidance, he learned how to identify his strengths, reflect on challenges and understand the importance of teamwork, communication and responsibility in a professional setting.
By the end of his placement, Alfie showed clear growth in confidence and independence, becoming more comfortable working with adults and contributing across the team. He reflected that the experience motivated him and helped clarify workplace expectations and future career possibilities.
We really valued Alfie’s positive attitude and willingness to learn and we’re proud to support young people to gain meaningful early experiences of the creative and cultural sector.
Thanks Alfie for joining us! Check out this video to hear more of what he got up to!

Erica Mulkern: Suzy Homemaker - 4th July | 7:30pm
The piece explores feminism through three historical periods: early 1900s, 1920s and the 1950s. ‘Suzy Homemaker’ was a line of miniature functional toy household appliances produced by Topper Toys, and launched in 1966, teaching girls how to be the perfect housewife. In this performance we see women throughout history trapped in a role they did not ask for, and had no choice in.
