My artist son ranked my novels.
First, the controversy. Originally he listed A Chorus Rises at number 2 WHICH I ADORED. Upon deeper reflection—and despite his adoration for my writing it out of spite—he had to swap it with the tied titles.
1) Cherish Farrah - It leads the pack due to what he calls the axes of intrigue: Farrah’s psychopathy + the plot + the reveal. The secret sauce for him is Farrah herself. My child called this novel magic. You can’t tell me a thing.
2) Mem and The Body - I adore my first and most recent novels being tied for him. The singularness of the protagonists, and why they are what and who they are. He couldn’t choose between the epiphany and the disaster, and I think that’s beautiful.
3) A Chorus Rises - Naema realizing the point of being an Eloko elevates her story above the remaining novels for him. My conviction in writing it showed up in the work for him. Guys, he referred to this one as a stroke of genius. Everyone who knows that I feel like ACR is my most underrated novel understands what this means to me.
4) So Many Beginnings - This was a surprising ranking to me because this is the one he’s called his favorite. For repeat readability and active enjoyment, that still stands. It’s just as smart as the others, he maintains, but “a minor key is objectively more interesting than a major key.”
5) A Song Below Water - Guys, I know. In his words, “It’s not that it deserves to be on the bottom, it’s that the others deserve to be higher.” What can you do!

Lately. Almost daily dates because there’s always something to see. Queen City historical monument in Alexandria, Toby’s ice cream, a recent evening skate when I didn’t know he was taking pictures, an amazing book event for @chanda.prescod.weinstein ‘s new release, and a black and white cat absolutely SHOOKETH by seeing his reflection in a car.
Quick little romantic jaunt to Chi-town for #C2E2! Not pictured: legit everyone but @authorchristinahenry ! So mad I was living in the moment! I’ll never make that mistake again. Shout out to the artists who took my money. And to Amtrak, My Eternal Flame.
The thing about being constantly on the go is that I completely forget about my favorite pictures. AwesomeCon was, unsurprisingly, awesome! I met Princess Tiana, Yubaba, Barbie and Ken! I got the dopest poster I’ve ever seen! I got a new Planet of the Apes shirt! Signed books, the book fair sold out of Mem because @readingismagical and @oliverdepp are day ones for my first one, had absolute bangers of panels! 1000/10.

I had to share this stunning edition of The Body by Bethany C. Morrow! The cover and under the dust jacket are gorgeous, and don’t even talk to me about the hidden sprayed edges 😍
I’m very intrigued by this one so look forward to tucking into it!!!
