Congratulations to our 2026 Alexis Mazurin Award winners! 🎙️ Luca Avila Slobodianik and Denenae Tingala were recognized for their audio documentary "As Resilient as the Cherry Blossom Trees", while Andrew Chen was honoured for his audio documentary "The Orchid". These pieces showcase the incredible storytelling, creativity, and hard work our students continue to bring to journalism and documentary production. We’re incredibly proud of all three of them. The Alexis Mazurin Award is a Canadian journalism accolade that honours excellence in radio documentary storytelling. Named after Alexis Mazurin — a talented comedian, CBC Radio personality, and BCIT journalism graduate — the award recognizes outstanding radio documentaries, particularly those produced by students. #BCIT #Journalism #AudioDocumentary #BroadcastJournalism #Storytelling

On Feb 7, we welcomed prospective students and parents, industry partners, alumni, advisors, and community members to our 2026 BCIT Broadcast Open House. Visitors got hands-on with our facilities, from camera equipment and green screens to podcasting, radio, and voiceover. They connected with instructors and industry professionals and learned about career paths in journalism, video production, and radio/podcasting. We’re especially grateful to our media partners Global News BC, CFOX, Rock 101, and 730 CKNW for their continued support of our students and programs. None of this happens without the incredible effort of our faculty, staff, and student volunteers who make the day so engaging and hands-on. 🔗 Learn more about the Broadcast and Media Communications programs: bcit.ca/broadcast 📸 Check out more event photos on Flick - link in bio! @bcit_journalism @bcittv @bcitradioarts @lifeatbcit #bcit #bcitbusinessandmedia #bcitbroadcast #bcitbroadcastopenhouse #journalism #tv #radio

We’re excited to welcome Robert Jago as BCIT’s very first Indigenous Storyteller in Residence. Robert is a writer, researcher, and entrepreneur who has dedicated his career to amplifying Indigenous voices and perspectives. In this new role, he’ll be working with students and faculty to explore how stories can be told with honesty, respect, and cultural understanding — and to help us all take meaningful steps toward reconciliation. https://www.bcit.ca/news/stories/robert-jago/ #bcit #journalism #studentjournalism #indigenous

This year’s standout audio docs took us to places that matter — from a tsunami’s impact in Port Alberni, to salmon conservation efforts, to the curling ice where Vancouver’s queer community finds connection. Each documentary had immersive sound, strong writing, and heartfelt storytelling. 🔹 In the Wave – Kai Garcia & Arden McLeod 🔹 Return to the Creek – Emma Bolzner, Quinlan Currie & Sandro Vargas 🔹 Out on the Ice – Riley Cunningham, Nate Elmes & Jonah Jung #AudioDoc #StudentJournalism #BCIT #broadcastjournalsim #LGBTQSports
