A two-time Latin Grammy nominee and guitar professor at Yale School of Music, João is one of the most versatile guitarists of his generation whose music draws from both the classical tradition and the sounds of Brazil. He has performed across the U.S., Europe, Asia, and Latin America, and has collaborated with artists such as Yo-Yo Ma and Paquito D’Rivera. His compositions have earned Brazil’s prestigious APCA Award and have been premiered by major orchestras and ensembles worldwide.

The Bellevue College International Guitar Series opens with the Tom Baker Quartet (TBQ), a beloved ensemble in the Pacific Northwest known for its improvisational, genre–blending style. TBQ features Jesse Canterbury (clarinets), Greg Campbell (drums), Brian Cobb (bass), and Tom Baker (guitar). Their latest album “Begin Again” was named “Best Northwest Recording of 2023” Earshot JazzMagazine.
