Kyiv
Capital of Ukraine
・・・
The day started with tears in our house today. Tears by Agnieszka, my Mom’s caretaker, who was on the phone with her Ukrainian friend, who was sitting in her car at the Ukrainian border, waiting in line to leave the country, utterly upset that she couldn’t persuade the grandparents to leave the country with them.
Tears by my Mom who remembers the bomb raids of her childhood. Tears by my Dad, who lost his 17-year old brother in the war. He only muttered, “The poor Ukrainian people…”
And tears by me. Tears of sadness, anger and frustration.
When I was 17 years old, I was naïve. I didn’t even realize I was effected by war. It took me a few more decades to realize, that I never met my uncle, never met the woman he might have married and never met the cousins and their children that would have been born.
When I was 17, I was so sure the world was evolving. Emancipation, tolerance, love, and understanding were on the rise. In 20 years or so, I was sure, there would be no more wars, we would have equal pay and, of course, racism, sexism, and bigotry would be a thing of the past. Girl, was I wrong!
In some areas, we make 3 steps forward and 2 steps back and in others, we totally march backwards. Religious fanaticism seems to be growing to ever new heights. The Russian gay propaganda law, in effect since 2013 has so many people living in fear, and now, Putin starts a war with Ukraine…
When I was 17, it seemed impossible, that 37 years later, greedy, ignorant old men, suffering from delusions of grandeur and a massive God complex would still be leading nations.
But here we are, a pussy-grabbing president who instigated an attack on the US capitol, a narcissist who holds North-Korea hostage, and now Putin, who has been in power way too long and is now completely insane.
And I am mad, and frustrated, and sad, and feel so helpless.
I am so sorry for the people in the Ukraine! Our hearts go out to you!
